Not sure if any of you guys read Newsweek, somehow I don't think so, but hey, suprise me.

Anyhow, there is an interesting article in this weeks edition (or at least the sucky european one, not sure about the US ones) about how video games are being used to promote new cars. It talks about how Japanese and Asian car companies are using games such as NFS and Gran Turismo to promote prototype cars upto 2 years before they are available for production. Apparently (and I wasn't aware of this) the racing game market is worth $1.7billion a year, and they are hoping to get a little more of rich kids buying cars. There isn't much mention of GTA, except that a lot of companies aren't too keen of putting their cars in such "r-rated" games because they don't want to be associated with drive-by shootings.

I looked for it on the website but couldn't see it, have a poke about in the business section if you want, or just look over someone's should in the newsagents :)

    Yeah, I never got quite why games makers have to pay for licenses when they're doing a massive favour to the car manufacturers.  The Dodge Viper's already huge following increased enroumously after people realised it was the mot fun stadard car in Gran Turismo 1.
    When a film is made with cars, the Swordfish with the new-shape TVR Tuscans, they are supplied free because of the favourable advertising. :{
    Games are turning more and more into a manifestation of the entertainment industry, so why are they treated so differently?
