I read the announcement by schu suggesting a method for grabbing your old topics.  I edited the host file:
Code:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

127.0.0.1       localhost
209.15.204.125       forums.gouranga.com

And tried opening:
forums.gouranga.com
forums.gouranga.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/
forums.gouranga.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi

But all came up with 404 page not found.
Penny for the blind? ?:

Try doing Code:
ipconfig /flushdns
at the command prompt... then try it again. Also, try accessing

209.15.204.125/

from your web browser, instead of

forums.gouranga.com

I just did the ipconfig thing, then tried this:
209.15.204.125/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi
Which game me the server's internal "file not found" page, rather than the IE 404 error page.

Have the old boards already been taken down perhaps? :*)

EDIT:  Also tried adding the suggested gournaga line to the proper hosts file rather than the sample one... no more joy. :!

Hmm.. I just tried again it worked fine...

First, make sure the hosts file doesn't have an extension... It shouldn't be saved as hosts.txt, hosts.doc, hosts.sam, etc... it should just be saved as hosts  with no extension...

other than that, I'm not sure what else you can do...  I guess try making the addition and then try restarting your computer and then try it again...

but I can tell you that the old boards are running...

If you just type in the IP it won't work... All of the sub-domains on the old server are on a name based system, basically, you have to go to forums.gouranga.com in order to get them to pop up because all the sites on the old server have the same ip, the server itself works out which site you want to see based on the sub-domains...

Am I trying the correct URLs?

When I type in "http://forums.gouranga.com" it comes up with this forum.
When I use the "/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi" I get 404 page not found.

There is both a hosts file with no extension and a hosts file with an extension.  I've added the line to both but no change... I'm using XP home edition, through an ntl cable modem (128k) and IE6.

Is there Another Way?? :*)

How about a web archive resource?
I tried Archive.org, but there isn't anything after 2001 logged there.

    EDIT : Heh. I found Azz's old board - web.archive.org/web/20010813070202/azz.gouranga.com/cgi-bin/ub2k/UltraBoard.cgi

Im not sure.. it should work.. the reason you get a 404 is because it's probably still looking for ikonboard on this server...

if it works you should just be able to go to forums.gouranga.com

try emailing me your hosts file and i'll take a look...

where did you find it by the way?

That's a really, really dumb thing to post. :]

Topics like cracking the helicopter code for GTA1 aren't ones that can be re-posted; they are more an archive of mission fixes.  In fact, the Editing Help section stuff is invaluble as a resource for anyone working out GTA1 mission scripting...
Similarly, there was the topic pinned in the previous 3D mods area about what textures do what.  That would be useful for people starting out in modeling and is rather an extensive work to be started from scratch again.

what exactly did you have in mind?  did you want me to download the old forum and upload it to the new server just to look at basically?

I guess I could do that for awhile, but let me check with azz to see how much of a pain in the ass it would be...

I don't mind hunting through the Editing Help section and digging out the good modding solutions.
I suppose it would require making a new topic here, with the first post just being the final solution...rather than all the different solutions which were tried?

Also, I was hoping to get someone to create a be-all and end-all list of map mods that have been made for GTA1...I know Azz started doing this a year or two ago but didn't seem to come to anything.

ok.. well I need to shut the old server down.. so what I'm going to do is this.. Azz told me that I should just run a backup on Ikonboard, which should backup all the old posts, etc... then I can install Ikonboard to a temporary URL here on the new server..

Personally I would like to rescue a lot of the old VC tips that were on that board, but I don't have time because the old server is costing money to keep running...

anyway, we'll see how it goes, hopefully it will all work out and I can grab the stuff I want and repost it here or something...
