I know almost everyone hates gta2, but I made a new map for it anyway. 'Tis only a quarter-sized map with nearly no peds on it, but it was intended to be used mainly for online games. There's a rather basic single player script included if anyone wants to try it out. And if anyone's intersted, I could throw together a version with peds, and missions of some sort.

After exploring it I've found some pretty neat stuff, like the hidden tank (how did it get up there?! X|) a huge jump (didn't try it) the rednecks area, neat traffic lights, some corners where the cars always crash into each other and a couple of cars with neat goodies... the army jeep and a meteor with a most generous 50 clips of mgun madness! :D

Over a distinct lack of weaponry though... Hidden Surprise from the original is pretty much the ideal map weapons-wise in that it has 2 rockets, all the bullet weapons, rapid fire and dbledamage, invisibility, flamer, electro, molotovs..instant gang is always cool but you'll need a little bit with peds in.

The rednecks place feels like there should be trucks parked in those driveways... lots of shotguns and molotovs.
Sticking a few heavy weapons around the freeway is always a good move, much like the large maps do with multiplayer.  A fire truck with a flamer turret would be most welcome... or actually, could you make a tank with a flamer turret?  Very WWII D-Day! :o

The map was a little uninspiring in places, there's areas you can access which have no point.  Such as the grass around the seaward side of the buildings... it's just irritating to find yourself teetering around those when nothing is there.  Plus they would kill the action in multiplayer.  Just a nice 1-cube sea wall slope at the edge is perfect, like around the rocket launcher island on Hidden Surpise.

Overall this map is great; there's some fantastic little touches of architecture using the part-cube mapping featuers, but it's too spread out with too few weapons atm.  Speaking of weapons, the Armour to the west of the start location hadn't loaded by the time I'd gotten there at the start; I went back a few seconds later and it had though.

EDIT:  There's WAY too many fences!  The raises platforms shouldn't have fences on the whole.  They make traversing the map take longer, when you want to be able to cross the map as quickly as possible imo...

Now I've gotten over the appaulingly tasteless handling, I've realised that GTA2 is actually an utterly fantastic game.  It's supreme in so many ways; original setting, incredible details like bus routes, taxis, trains that slow on approaching stations, huge range of weapons all perfectly balanced, AI perfectly suited for the cars and peds, innovative and interesting maps covered in special areas and neat features... the list is endless. :)

EDIT:  Just tested the multiplayer with Mewish.
OMGOMGOMG
That is the greatest map!  Now I've explored the whole thing it's just sublime.  Things I've found:
 • "Fire" Truck. ;)
 • Army Jeep
 • Tank.
 • Rockets.
 • Flamer.
 • Secret Island to the south with flamer & return ramp.
 • Rooftop with powerups on 2 fans.
 • Gladiator Stadium type situation.
 • Lots of rooftops with linky bits, 1 has no stairs and another has stairs to shallow (east).

Overall; this is a killer map.  Two really good players (like me and mew) will have ace shoot-outs with rockets, flamers and electro... just awesome, dude! :*)

Wow, I think  this got more replies than SC2 had people who even bothered to try it. :D

I'm gald everyone likes it fo the most part. And sorry if it's a bit. erm, empty at the moment... I was planning on adding more weapons and such later, just wanted to send out a beta version to make sure evrything was working okay. Eventually there should be more stuff in those obscure locations, and more cars parked about the place in general.  Maybe even throw in some articulated trucks with time bombs on 'em. ;)

@Cerb- Waht did you mean by there being too many fences? Most of the ones I put in are really just there to keep people from falling in the water unexpectedly, with a few around certain areas for a bit of realism. If there's any you feel are absolutly useless, tell me which ones and I'll see if I can't get rid of them.

As for the narrow grasy bits around seaside buildings, yea, I see what you mean about them wasting time. Should I block them of with fences or something?
(Oh yea, there is a instant gang? on the map. It's in the dead center of the island, on the spot with that compass painted on the sidewalk.)

By the way, did the game seem to run any faster without the random peds on it? I was hoping that would help, but I still haven't got a chance to test it out online due to some computer problens.  :()

Unfortunately, peds and traffic make no difference to online speed.  GTA2 doesn't send the ped and traffic locations over the net, it just sends the player movements.  Ped/traffic movement is calculated by both computers and they get the same results (if the game is in sync) based on the player movements.

Very little data is sent but that data must be received very quickly (under 150ms) for the game to be fast.

It's possible to get the tank just by jumping off the small ledge north of it in a fast car, you don't need to do the big ramp jump.  Was this intentional?

It's very risky to drive the firetruck since it can be destroyed with only 1 rocket hit and it's an easy target.  Maybe it should be made stronger, making it explosion proof would probably be a little too strong though :)

Yeah, I found the Instant Gang but forgot to add it to that bullet-points list. :S

I think the weapons are actually really well spaced out.  I rekon that it's a good thing the map being that big, because it means both players generally will get armed before they meet each other so there;s no need for formalities to check... ideal :)
Weapons I found during the game with Mew:
Flamer in building courtyard.
Flamer on secret island (need a Stinger with mines here imo)
Rockets in a courtyard with ramps up to it.
Rockets in the huge mountain, but can't be accessed?
Molotovs in raised area in RedNecks territory.
Meteor with 50 rounds Car Mguns.
Flamer Fire Truck.
Tank on ramp, accessed from ledge to north.
Assorted Armour and Mgun combos, on rooves and in yards.
Instant Gang
ElectroGun and Grenades in Stadium.

What would be rather neat is having a proper arm-your-car garage place: respray, carbomb, mines, vehicle mguns are the best.  Maybe add a couple of Oils Slick powerups?
