I've changed the fonts to sizable instead of fixed. Was a bit more complicated than I expected so there might be problems.

Finished rewriting the G-Style theme.

Changed the edit messages around a little as well. It's a bit shorter and only displays the person who changed the message if it wasn't the original poster.

Oh, and happy birthday Cerbera, even if I am a day late. Oopps. uhoh
Hoorah for reverse psychology! smilewinkgrin

Advertising my birthday seems to have been a really good idea, I've had a few PM's so I'll probably make a topic about it.

The resizable fonts can be a pain because you can end up with percentages inside percentages unless you are canny with how you set the classes up in the HTML.  I know there are problems on my site from double-setting percentages in some titles, so I'll have to fix them when the DNS is updated.

Yes, that's the problem I had. I need to make a few modifications to it at some point. But not now though, because I'm going back to writing my assignment...

I can see the Quote and Edit buttons in this thread but when viewing this one I couldn't.  I clicked through to the topic a few times to get different schemes (I'm using Random so I get to check consistancy between them all as I browse) but these links didn't show up at all.

Good luck with your assignment...I thought this forum was your project thing though?

That was last years project cerbera. This year I'm doing something different. This one was a bit longer... 35,000 words and 124 pages. (Well, was only meant to be 10,000 words but I err did a few extra.)

I just have some other assignements to do (one for monday and one for friday) and then the course will be over. I should have some time to create the themes then. Themes submitted by members of the community get priority so I'll work on yours next, Toumai.

I think I read Delfi was having problems with some javascript in Mozilla so I'll fix that as well when I have some time.

Stick with it, losing concentration on your new projects because of old ones isn't a good move.  I used to do it with my GTA stuff, refining things beyond thier requirements and it held back the development of my new projects a lot.  When it's a formal course like you are doing I guess it's even more important.

Christ, it's like you've got your priorities in order or something! uhoh

(EDIT)  Once you do get time, the PM deletion system dumps you unceremoniously at a very basic page with the "return to PM system" displayed directly onto the background of the forum, which makes the text unreadable in some skins.  Sticking it in a secondary bar would neaten this up.

Fixed background not appearing for PM deletion page.

Improvements for Mozilla:

 •  Javascript now works!
 •  Forms now have properly sized captions at the start.
 •  Smilie box is the correct size.
 •  User info box (log out/switch user/etc) is now the correct size.

Added a "remember me" option to the log in page which is checked by default. If checked you'll be remembered until the end of 2030. If not checked the cookie will automatically expire when you close your browser window.

It's to make it easier/more secure for public computers. No need to log out before closing your browser and if you forget it will expire anyway.

*squints at the picture* I think I see a dollar sign in there which means I'm trying to run PHP code as HTML. I'll go and see...

*few seconds later...*

Ah yes, indeed I am. Fixed!

I decided to take a day off from assignments. So after I realised I had to go to college to hand in an assignment (doh) I started otimizing the mysql queries on the board.

All the main ones for the template (which is used on all pages) are done. And I've done the the ones used to show topics and recent posts on the main page.

I wasn't expecting a major increase in speed but I was suprised!

Average page generation time before: 8.6693 seconds (based on 12 tests)
Average page generation time after optimization: 2.5494 seconds (based on 27 tests)

That's a 71% decrease in the time it takes to  generate pages! And the average time between requesting the main page and it being sent to your browser is now 6.1193 seconds faster.

I'm happier than a self harmer with a box of broken light bulbs!

Now, I just need to find some time to sort the other pages.

Edit

Topic page is done.
Forum page is done.
Who's Online page is done.
Search page is done.

Moved the code that makes up the dates in readable format (i.e. 3 weeks 7 days 4 hours etc) from the pages and placed it inside the functions page instead. Less repeated code that way.

I've been busy breaking updating the forum.

The code to add smilies to messages has been rewritten into a nice array. No visual change, it's just improved code and runs about 0.00000001 seconds faster.

We now have lists! You can make lists very easily and there are loads available. Although most of the obscure types like cjk-ideographic and katakana-iroha only work in mozilla and mozilla firefox.

Examples:

  • this
  • list
  • uses
  • normal
  • letters
  • in
  • lower
  • case

  • this
  • list
  • uses
  • squares

  • this
  • is
  • a
  • numeric
  • list

  • this
  • list
  • is
  • in
  • cjk-ideographic
  • (whatever
  • that
  • is)

  • and
  • if
  • you
    • are
    • a
    • clever
      • monkey
      • you
      • can
    • combine
    • lists
    • to
  • make
  • them
  • indented

I added the list tags to the "input tags" box with a few examples of common list types you'll want to use. The full list and explanation can be found at the end of the messages codes page.

Good, glad you both like it.

I wanted to know which browsers are being used by the 8000+ hits per day generated here so I started logging them a couple of days ago. Henceforth, we now have this little page:

Browser Usage

Usage is updated automatically.

Now, I'm going to run away, hide under my bed and cry because over 80% of visitors use Internet Explorer.

I've rewritten the date functions so they give more understandable dates (like 5 hours and 6 minutes ago). It's in this format up to 24 hours and then they go back to being normal dates.

If you prefer it this way or hate it this way, post below. If a lot of people dislike it then I'll add an option to your profile to disable it. It just seems a waste to have more database usage if no one would disable it.

Oh, and I rewrote some of the code for the temp ban page. No visual change, it just works a little faster and it'll be easier to change in the future if necessary.
