I think in terms of graphics over the top effects are not what makes a game look good, for example I think Vietcong looks fantastic graphically and doesn't have any stupid new effects, it just has a consistent, well-made, gritty look which runs very smoothly. If you look at Doom 3 and ignore the lighting effects it looks piss poor to be honest, the textures on some of the stuff look flat as a fart and the level modelling looks pretty shocking.
For good graphics in a 3D game, things need to be modelled and textured well. With a bit of effort something as old as Quake can look absolutely fantastic.
Also some of the effects actually annoy me like over the top lens flares, overly shiny and reflecty water, bump mapping usually ends up making surfaces look a bit too odd for my liking as well. Don't get me wrong I'm all for advances but why should I have to spend a few hundred for a new graphics card just so it can do some extra shading on the dust clouds?
Yes. And yeah, there are some brilliant games with brilliant graphics out there. I'm just pissed off at the ones where graphical quality prevails over the overall quality and enjoyment of the game. |
