| With all the strangeness going on around here I thought I would offer some feelings and opinions to bring back normality. This is my first attempt at a "rant", so go easy on me ;) I'm just going to ramble on about anything I can think off and only fix typo's when I've finished. This way everything can be unedited and my true opinions. * Hmm, what to being with... Censoring stuff! A while ago I was going to watch a comedy programme set in a train station but it had been cancelled because the week before there was some horrible train crash and people died, apparently. This doesn't make any sense to me. Just by watching the programme I'm not being disrespectful to the families of those who died. It's ridicolous really, there are trains all over the place but it's the TV programme that gets cancelled. There are trains whizzing around the country for gods sake! Then the other day I switched on the TV and they were showing hundreds of crowded children being taken hostage by masked terrorists carrying guns and with bombs lying around on the floor. Then they had all the military outside and then obliterated the place and killed most of the people. This was on at the same time as children's TV programmes. How is that alright to show but a comedy programme about a train station isn't?! Censoring swearing also seems kind of strange to me. But each time I watch a film there's always "this film contains strong language" before it. Anyone who's going to be offended by that needs to make a reality check and realise that swearing is just a form of expression and it's widely used everywhere you go. In the cafe at work the other day a few people were swearing, but there's no sign saying "Caution customers! People may be swearing in the cafe!!". Here in Blighty we are more tolerant towards swearing, I think over in America there are sixteen or so words that can't be said on TV, but at least you can say anything you like here, you just need a silly warning before. This is one of the reason I didn't write a swear filter into IceyBoard for ages and it's not enforced or enabled by default. People should be given the option with these things, you can't just censor out everything that could possibly harm everyone. With that attitude no one would ever cross a road for fear of being killed or use a car for fear of crashing. Censoring swearing doesn't make much sense anyway, what's to stop me just typing something or saying it? Well, fuck me. Oh no, my brain, it be ruined! * Enough on that. Next topic... hmm, films! I didn't watch films for like the first eighteen years of my life, then people always seemed to be talking about them, so I got interested and now I watch loads of them. However, I dislike films that concentrate too hard on special effects and CGI and whatever the latest spinning-motion-camera-nonsense is these days. If I'm going to watch a film it'll be because I want to see a visual story with an gripping plot and interesting characters. Other things like humour and famous actors are just a bonus. An example of a film I didn't like was the Matrix. It's fantastic for what it's designed and planned to be, it just doesn't suit me. It's all just flashy effects and there are too many characters to really get involved with the film. I like most films I've watched, here are some that stand out in my memory: Freeway, The Last Supper, The Ice Storm, The Hole, Fight Club, Sleepy Hollow and Jeepers Creepers. All great films in my opinion. * At the moment I'm enjoying lots of comedy programmes on the television. I'm not too fussy and I'm easily pleased so I tend to like everything. Green Wing seems to be my favourite at the moment. It's a weird comedy programme set in a hospital and each episode goes from the morning of one day all the way through to the end. It's about the petty arguments, romances and interactions between the characters. There are loads of really funny moments. Each episode is an hour long, yet they still fill it with funny scenes and it never feels too long. It's great! It's on channel 4 at 9:30 on Friday. I like plenty of other comedy programmers like Frasier, Father Ted, Black Books, Red Dwarf, Smack the Pony, Will & Grace, Only Fools and Horses, The Office, Friends and so on. * One thing I'll never understand is political correctness. In no way am I racist, I have no prejudice or hatred towards any groups of people, yet I constantly find myself trying to work out the least offensive term to call a group of people. Like, say, I'm describing someone and they are 'coloured'. Do I call them black, coloured, of an ethnic minority, african-american? As I say, I'm not racist, but I always worry I'm going to offend people and feel guilty about calling people black even though that's exactly what they are. And hell, I'm white so why should calling someone black be offensive? *sigh* I don't know. I think it's perfectly okay to have an opinion for or against something, just not to the point where you're intentionally offending someone. I'm sure we all belong to some minority group. I belong to the half-english/half-scottish, glasses-wearing, ridicolously underweight, teetotal, atheist, blonde, vegetarian, geek group. So I'm not exactly in a position to insult anyone else ;) I don't agree with some things, like goths, religious people and the welsh but I wont insult them. We all choose different things to be part of and that's fine. If we were all the same, life would be boring. * Vegatarianism I've always found confusing. On the one hand I think it's alright to eat animals because everyone else does and they wouldn't be edible if we weren't supposed to eat them. I don't think lions and stuff would think twice about eating me if it was hungry. And we all need protein. Most of the animals wouldn't be around if we weren't going to eat them, so is it better than an animal existed and was eaten than it not existing at all? But then I think eating the dead corpse of an animal is kind of disgusting and it seems wrong to raise an animal for the purpose of eating it. I prefer to stay out of the issue by not eating meat until something happens that forces me to make a fixed choice. * One thing that's annoying me at the moment is football. I have absolutely zero interest in football; never been interested and never will be. Yet everyone I've met at work seems obssessed with it. Half of them go to work in their football shirts while I wear a shirt+tie combination. Then they talk about football all day, go to matches at night and then play it on the weekend. I was watching Jimmy White play snooker earlier and they interupted the snooker to show football scores! Oh larwd, I bet they don't interupt football to show snooker results. I never really understood why they show the results of one sport on another. If I wanted to know I would watch the football or I would record it and watch it later. But then they just told me the result and ruined it! One day I'll be watching coronation street and they'll tell me "Marleen had a baby on EastEnders, OMFG!!!". * This is getting a bit long for a rant. So I'll make this the last one. So let's see, what else can I complain about? Phones! I hate phones, they are the most horrible, vile, disgusting, useless pieces of rubbish I've ever seen. The only good thing about phones is that phone lines can be used for the internet! So why don't I like phones? First, I like one of two things when I'm having a converstion. First, I want to some time to think about what I'm saying. Which is why I use e-mail/boards and not instant messengers. If that's not possible I want to be able to see the other person that I'm talking to, I want to see their reactions to what I'm saying and I want to be near them. Phones have none of these things and they have plenty of problems as well. At work we have these things called speaker phones which broadcast your conversation to a whole room of people. So you could be innocently ringing someone up and suddenly twenty people are listening to you. Bah! And then you have stupid things like bad receptions, not being able to hear people, mobile phone bills, text messages with words like "u" and "r". We're raising a bunch of people that only use one letter for each word. Soon it'll just go to "u", "r", "g" and we'll de-evolve back into cavepeople. Urgh, hurh, grug, hrguhu, hurg. * That was my rant, thanks for listening ;) ------------------ ![]() |

| Oh Icey, that was indeed a nice rant! Not many rants make me read all of it... but yours did. Congratulations :D icey wrote: Censoring stuff! I agree with the train station thing - I mean does that mean we need to stop all trains running too, because it might offend Doris and her cat Gilly? Come off it! This goes hand in hand with the whole PC thing you mention later. Censoring swearing on the other hand, I have no problem with. Personally I would not like my child hearing this foul language on the TV. Movies and late night shows here are not censored so perhaps I'm not familiar with the true aggrovation of it... I don't swear much at all because I find it's generally just a sign that you can't express yourself properly so you resort to these vague descriptors.. "oh, thats fucked" - "why?" - "well it makes me feel shit, its fucking turd". See, they dont actually mean anything. True though they can show that you feel strongly about something. "I'm fucking tired!" Quote: films! The Matrix is great IMO. That's really what it boils down to. Opinion... Quote: Political Correctness. Absolutely fucking ridiculous (see appropriate use of swearing there). Australian Aboriginals are amongst the worst at this. And no, I'm not being racist, I'm just telling the truth. Did you know you're not supposed to ask an abo "Are you an aborigine?" That's offensive. Or something. It's such a double standard. Quote: Vegatarianism Steak tastes good, and it's healthy for you. Didn't you ever watch the lion king? The circle of life dude. Quote: football Same. I try to pretend to be interested, I really do. But it's a load of bollocks. What's funny is how when a team wins the whole country/area is like "WOO WE WON!" Since when were they a part of the team? I don't think they did anything to contribute, unless sitting on the sofa eating chips and watching the game counts? I also hate the amount of money people are paid to run holding a ball. But that's another rant, and I don't want to steal yours! ------------------ |

Pure comedy gold. And despite the fact that she looks wierd, I quite fancy Tamzin Grieg too. ------------------ Maindrian and Touge's videos of vague annoyance - Est. 2007 |

| No, I agree with Icey on the phones front too. I can't stand the way mobile phones ruin a good conversation. You know, you're just sitting there, chatting away and suddenly, theirs goes off. All communication is lost there for a moment, and the energy goes out of the room. I hate my house phones. They're on a massive network, so if one of them goes off, the whole house starts ringing. So, the last thing I need is one of the fucking things going off in my pocket when I'm out and about. Unfortunatly, if it wasn't for my mobile, I wouldn't have a social life. :( ------------------ Maindrian and Touge's videos of vague annoyance - Est. 2007 |

| Alfa: I didn't really think about censoring swearing for that reason. That sounds like a perfectly fine reason that I agree with. Whenever I see kids (2/3 years old) swearing all the time it just makes me think they must have terrible parents. Unfortunately I see that far more than I should. I totally agree with just swearing to insult something (which i got annoyed about in the firefox topic). I'm not keen on the overkill in programmes like South park and the Osbournes. I just object to language warnings before films that are on several hours past the watershed. It can be a film with people being murdered but they don't mention that, they just mention the language which prolly occurs infrequently and is completely in character. It always seem strange when people on TV programmes crash their cars or burn themselves and they say "Oh deary me, I just burnt my hand off. Oh me, oh my!" I'm sure in reality we wouldn't say that. But your point overrides that so I'm in agreement with you on that topic. (matrix) Aye, it all depends what you're looking for in films I suppose. Most people I know liked the Matrix and assumed I did as well. My parents even bought me the DVD for it :] I just gave it back to my dad, I'm sure he would like it far more than me. (political correctness) One thing that bugs me is how groups of people (like pop groups) always seem to have n-1 white members and then 1 black member. Just seems like they are recruiting any random person based on their colour so they don't appear racist/offend anyone. Doesn't make much sense to me, all-black groups never have a white member so why should we do the same back? Seems that obtaining variety is done by recruiting people that have different coloured skin. I couldn't really say that we should always pick the best person for a job because everyone deserves a chance. Is it right to deny a blind person a job if someone else can do the job better? It's going to be unfair regardless of the choice made. (vegetarianism) I watched the lion king years ago so I don't remember much of it now. I'll see if it appears on the TV in the future and I'll see it then. (football) I don't even bother pretending to like football. I don't like it so I wont lie to attempt to fit in. I don't think you should either, have you ever had a conversion with someone who says they know about something and realised they know absolutely nothing about it? It's frustrating. Ha, don't worry about "stealing" my rant, talk as much as you want! Maindrian: (green wing) Aye, she is rather attractive and the weirdness just adds to that! I haven't seen Spaced before (an american thing?) but I'll look out for that. (phones) I'm glad someone agrees! I find it annoying when you're at the cinema and some ejit lets their mobile phone go off. There are loads of notices and it even says before the film. We're all born stupid but some people don't change! People always get far too hooked into "texting". My mate at work spends the whole of his break writing one text message to his girlfriend. Bah, I couldn't be doing with that. One of the criteria for my girlfriends is that they must be able to use e-mail! Which is prolly why I'm single. The other annoying thing about phones is that we only have one phone line here and I have to disconnect from the 'net every time someone needs to use the phone. So my sister does her best to be as annoying as possible by saying things like "Oh, I'm expecting a phone call in the next four hours, stay off the internet!" Bitch. Needles: Thank you! It was your rant the other day that inspired me to make this one ;) Thresh: Thank ye. Cerbera: I shall read that topic tomorrow, it sounds rather interesting. (vegetarianism) Eating plants doesn't bother me. You can't compare the life of an plant to an animal in the same way that you can't compare the life of an animal to a human. If I'm out driving an night and a badger/fox runs into the road I'll run it down, there's no way I'm going to veer off the road and potentially risk my life and anyone else I'm with. It's not selfish to say that my life is worth more than an animal. I don't think you'll win an arguement by trying to make plants seem less healthy then meat. That's like going to war with the french army! Both meat and vegetables are healthy, but it always seems to be meat that gets bad publicity with BSE, dodgy butchers, contaminated meat and so on. There was a programme on just the other day about sub-standard meat being sold around the UK. Even if vegetables could be harmful they are still less harmful than meat and I have to eat something. Although I don't have a problem with eating vegetables. But as I say, I'm not really decided either way on the issue, so I'm just not eating meat because I can potentially go either way with my choice. Perhaps I'll return to eating meat again one day, but at the moment the idea disgusts me. (im's) I'll go to sleep in a minute so I'm not too exhausted when I get home tomorrow. Then I'll make some time to speak with you. ------------------ ![]() |

I didn't say plants were less healty, my point was that eating anything can seem grim but you can swallow all kinds of stuff and our digestion is robust enough to cope. Therefore worrying about what you eat is sensless. Additionally, mushrooms are a vegateble and they are often poisonous. Berries are a fruit but many of those are poisonous. So don't pretend that vegetables/fruits are some kind of uber-foods compared to meat. Human physiology is omnivorous, as you know, so we MUST eat a wide variety of material to remain healthy. | I can understand vegetarianism but I have 2 points to make. There are not 3 things, humans, animals, and plants. There a 2 things, plants and animals. Humans are simply a kind of animal. Some animals eat plants, some eat other animals, and some eat both, we fit into the section of animals that eat plants and other animals. My second point is about vagaterians that still eat fish!!? DOUBLEYOU-TEE-EFFF? some people seem to think its ok because it's sort of not really meat, or something. Actually it is more damaging to the enviroment than eating cows or something. It's quite simple really, all land based animals that are eaten have been breed for this purpose, at a cattle place or whatever, and so it is renewable. Whereas almost all sea food is netted straight out of the natural ecosystem and is never relaced, and is literally wiping out species of fish. It's doing terrible damage. ------------------ Sig was killed by Needles for being fucking vast! 16/05/2005 at 15.03 GMT |
