Hey Loki thanks for the kick up the pants, loves the GTA2.

But I can't find where to download it, the rockstargames.com frame for GTA2 only has a link to the official site, and that just gives you the option for the Demo.

www.take2games.com/modules/gta2/frameset.html

There is a nostalgia page right?

Edit:

Bah.

Downlaod GTA 2 here.

Let's hope they get mirrors soon because the GTA2 webpage is too busy...

Now they've gone and added a 'formal' you-can't-download-because-it's-busy page.

DAMMIT.

[big]WOOOOOOOOT[/big]

I guess I will just wait for a couple of months before I try to download it.  I wonder if MultiSlayer v4.1 will work on it?

I thought it said on their site very plainly that the GTA2 download was not freeware and only licensed vendors could distribute it other than R* themselves.  I hope Icey was not engaging in piracy.

I notice we both use GetRight...but Olive XP?  OLIVE?! uhoh

Quicker than waiting for R* to expand their server line. =p Would be up to the site if they posted it on...

I actually got my Wild Metal copy from "vito.masturbatesfrequently.com". I kid you not. But that was when I had crappy dial-up and R* sites didn't work with DAP OR GetRight...

4.7 kangaroo's! The last one had it's tail chopped off.

I suppose you are right about it being somewhat unethical about downloading it from a different site. However, they have released it for free and R* are having bandwidth problems, so downloading from a 'mirror' would seem to be a sensible idea. They aren't losing any money by me downloading from somewhere else and it'll mean less of a load on their servers.

Aye, Getright is great, although they removed the option to add files but not make them download, which is very annoying. I'm only really using Getright until I can find a similar free alternative. I've tried several, but they didn't really compare or had spyware or constantly annoyed me about stuff.

Olive XP is better than the kiddy blue theme! And the grey one is... well, grey. So that only leaves olive. Perhaps I should just buy a linux magazine with an up-to-date distribution on it and install that. No more Windows sounds nice. And I could run Firefox, Thunderbird, Neverwinter Nights, Apache and (nearly) all the stuff I use regularly.

Well, it does seem to be going along at a terrifying pace...

Since no one would ignore the agreement for a free game that can't be downloaded from the official site, I just have to assume that all mirrors have written permission from rockstar to distribute the game.

The free version is basically the same as the retail version but the radio is stored on the hd and it doesn't have cd checks.  I don't think they really optimised much but GTA2 ran fine for me anyway.  It still says v9.6 but it includes the nade exploit fix that v10.3 has. The official patch also won't work on this free version since it would ask for the cd. They didn't replace the DMA logo on the main menu like they did with GTA1. There's only two language choices in GTA2 Manager instead of the regular five choices.

The exe files are different and these files compare different:

mp1-2p.mmp
mp1-3p.mmp
mp1-4p.mmp
mp1-5p.mmp
mp1-6p.mmp
mp2-2p.mmp
mp2-3p.mmp
mp2-4p.mmp
mp2-5p.mmp
mp2-6p.mmp
mp5-2p.mmp
mp5-3p.mmp
mp5-4p.mmp
mp5-5p.mmp
mp5-6p.mmp
res-2p.mmp
res-2p.SCR
res-3p.mmp
res-3p.SCR
res-4p.mmp
res-4p.SCR
res-5p.mmp
res-5p.SCR
res-6p.mmp
res-6p.SCR

For the mmp files, a space was removed from the descriptions, eg. "Residential 2 Player" is now "Residential 2Player".  That doesn't effect multiplayer but different .SCR files means you can't play Residential level without sending the files to your opponent.

All the other data files are the same as the unpatched v9.6 GTA2 retail.  It connects to retail v9.6 ok and it was synced for the 30 seconds that I tested but there is at least one problem, the nade/molotov exploit is fixed in this free version, so if a player does that in the retail version, the game will go out of sync.

Unofficial XP patch is just a cracked v10.3 ( the crack has a side effect that makes your name appear corrupt in the joining screen, doesn't seem to corrupt it in game though ).  I know nade flying was fixed in v10.3, I was refering to v9.6 retail.  This free version would just give you an error if you tried to play someone with v10.3.
