A little update!

The coding is going well, but one slight little glitch... I can't have the little GTA2 tokens as it crashes when the player enters the area of the pickup. This is due to the fact the object is 'deleted' whilst the arrow is still pointing to it before the arrow itself can be deleted! Of course, I could make it point to the location with the object ontop, but might look a little strange! In this case, I'll leave it at pointing to the location instead...

As well as that, I've placed 30 checkpoints around the city (so far), but you have to drive within a strict area if you are to collect the point (accurate to 1 block, so its pretty generous!). I'll be testing 2 player with my laptop as well to see if it works correctly (if one player drives over a point, the next point is activated etc) sooner or later, then I'll be expanding it slowly and testing it. The final script to find out who the winner should be working, and is a simple script to see who has the most tokens (each checkpoint adds +1 to your score which is hidden). If you have the most, you gain $1,000,000 (or whatever multiplayer GTA2 max score is, or something close) and you win the game!

Well, I'll report soon and test my findings! Have fun out there in the mean time  smile

I got GTASA a couple of days ago but if you happen to find me surfacing from it on MSN, I'd like to help pick checkpoint locations.

One annoying thing that is constantly happening is that there are random 'crash zones' when driving around (same with other maps). If I drive over it one time, it could crash, but another time it could be fine. That's GTA2 for you... but hopefully won't mess up multiplayer!  no

Still, time to test on the laptop for 2 player mode  smile

Cerb: the locations I have chosen are pretty good and travel all around the city, and even include small roads as well. I'll be increasing the width of the checkpoints (despite what I said earlier  dead ) that cover the entire width of the road and pavement. I'll send you a picture sooner or later, providing you can peel yourself away from the other San Andreas  smilewinkgrin

Edit: Cerb, I also finished the sounds tute as well detailing the various sounds. Some of them make the compiler crash (I know, I've checked all spellings and variations) and some don't even play! And just so you know, its not formatted this time  tongue. I'll send it sooner or later, and then perhaps you could add that and the crane tute?  smile

Sure, if you see me on MSN send the file transfer and I'll hear the dingle.

Making the checkpoints big will only work if you can make their borders visible.  I think having to actually drive over the marker thing is a great idea since it will require accurate controls and perhaps a little argy-bargy. wink

Including little roads is good.  Are all those annoying bollards present in the GTA2 edition of the map?  There are no bikes in GTA2 so they are just irritating.

The checkpoints will only be 1 block in depth, but will cover the entire width of the road (including any pavement if there is any). I doubt markers would be needed in this case, but I could place the arrow objects on either side of the road on the pavement facing the checkpoint area. E.g.

--> checkpoint area <--

Some places might have to have floating arrows, as some checkpoints cross a bridge etc, but I'll see how it looks!

There are no bollards on the map Cerb, as they have to be created in the script file. I might place bollards on the main bridge in the middle so people can't cross over (and helps me control the area of the checkpoint!) to the other side... but we'll see!  yes

Righty, back again. This last week has been a bit mad for me and college and planning for university. On friday (8th July) I went to my graduation for my course (qualified for my HND!  smile ) and then went out with some friends that evening as well as going to cinema etc. Also went up to an open day at university to talk about 2nd year entry of a 3 year degree course, and all worth it! But anyway, with a new qualification under my belt, I just have to get stuff ready for uni... and that's it!

Before that, I managed to test it with 2 players, and suprisingly, it worked (only tested on LAN). Of course, there is the random 'map crashes' that I can't avoid, but is generally pretty good. This test was based on the checkpoints I have now (1 block in size), but the next test will be (probably) expanding the checkpoint areas as mentioned above. Then, I'll need to test with perhaps 3 or 4 players, so a beta version will be released sometime in the future for some testing and feedback.

A little more tweaking is needed, but otherwise it's good for now  smile

Cerb: I'll send you the map of the checkpoints tomorrow and see what you think.

I look forward to it.  If you catalogue the areas where you get map crashes you could see if they are based on any specific sections, which you could then simply block off it worst comes to worse.  You can't release a map which is crashable.

(EDIT) My ideas for checkpoint locations:

After all, I did place it in the right section ('Mod Feedback')  yes

Don't know if this project is still alive but anyway. I just tested this map with a simple script and it seems that the map makes the game crash even if you don't go anywhere. I tried standing still and the game crashed after a while.

EDIT: I tested the map with a different STY file and didn't experience any crashes so there is something wrong with sanb.sty it seems.

I've had no crashing problems with MultiSlayer, which is based on the miami.g24 file you converted.  In the other thread, Tyyppi explains a script-related crash which solve all/some of the problems.  Hopefully some of the people assisting this project can get it to run in a stable way, since it would be a great level to play online.

It's not a script problem, it's a .sty issue and the solution is in that thread now :)
