The problem wether you should be able/have to replay failed missions or not is not that easy to answer IMO, either way creates logical problems. If an important person in a mission dies because you fail it, it's a logical error that this person was somehow revived for you the next time you try this mission. On the other hand, if you fail a mission and just continue the story without any consequences, that's a logical error either.

GTA with the o[pen endedness of Deus Ex? Good idea.

Lets leave Invisible War alone though.I mean, your choices made no difference until the last 5 minutes of the game, where you could change sides instantly, despite having killed everyone who worked for those people. Grr.

Bah, I think alot of you are talking shit.

I know how easy it is to remember GTA1 and GTA2 being so fun. But lets face it - we loved those games SO much at the time, that we have kind of a warped memory of them.

There is absoultely no comparison between the missions in the 3D GTA's and the missions in the original GTA's. The way I see it, you had to use your imagination in the originals, and that made the missions quite special, but in GTA3-SA you dont NEED your imagination, everything is right there infront of you. Sure there were some annoying missions, but I'd like to think that the only annoying missions were the ones that were too difficult and thus required repeated play. Ideally, every mission should be hard, but completable in the first go, or if not the first definately the second.

All the 3D GTA's had good missions, but I definately think they improved as each new game came out. I would honestly call San Andreas the best GTA, because it quite simply offers so much more than the others and there are lots of missions with a great variety. For example, you get the 'thugged out' missions at the beginning, then missions for bent cops, missions for yourself (building up the garage), working for a pimp, for Woozie (first in San Fierro then for him in his casino), the CIA guy, etc etc, and there are many more storyline characters. Touge (I think) said that they didn't use enough of the locations, but I disagree. I think they used the locations well - San Andreas is too big to make use of EVERYTHING in a mission, but for main places on the map I could probably associate that place with a mission I was doing (be it a side-mission or a storyline mission).

It kind of pisses me off when people say 'SA was shit' or whatever, it's ludicrous. The only concievable reason you could prefer the other 3D GTA's to SA was if you were some kind of racist and didn't like playing as a black character. Because other than that, there is absoultely nothing it lacks that was present in the other 3D games.

Don't want to play the 'defend your turf' stuff? Then for gods sake DONT PLAY IT! It's not intergral to the story and you can simply save the game if your turf is under attack, or play a mission or something.

Anyway, in conclusion, YES GTA1 was an amazing experience when we were young laddies, it was totally new and breathtakingly cool, stylish, and open-ended. But lets face it, that was getting on for ten years ago. I think we had better imaginations back in the GTA1 days which is why it felt so fun, whereas now it's all 3D and we expect everything.

Stop obsessing over the old GTA games, they do not compare! 'Better for it's time' does not mean it's better now.

When I was thinking about open ended mission structure, I thought it would play a large part of the game, meaning that there would be over 3 endings to the game. Think True Crime-wise, only less......shit, I suppose.

And also, that "defend your turf shit" was intergral to the plot at the end, and it was mostly shite thresh, Don't get me wrong, I agree with most of the shit you said, anyone who doesn't like GTA San Andreas should fall onto spikes..... But there were the odd parts of SA where the missions got a little tedious or really far-fatched. I enjoy GTA cos its about Gangsters, not jetpack flying, CIA assisting, alien hunting gangstas....thats just silly. yes

That's about it...

There was basically one mission involving the jetpack, right?

Sure you might not have liked the odd mission, but you're simply forgetting that you didn't like the odd mission in the old games too.

GTA was sensible when? I liked the "steal a plane" and jetpack missions... ones that pissed me off were things like the dancing and "steal some book" missions. How boring and tedious.

I really enjoyed the sneaking missions at first, but they became more of a piss-off later in the game.

I'm going to side with Touge (?) on the effective use of landscape debate - I would've liked there to be some really longass driving missions. I reckon the only mission really comparable to that was the one where you have to fly the WW2 plane round the northwest coastline, staying just above the ocean and under the radar.

Discounting racing and trucking missions, the Angel Pine/Chiliad area was left relatively untouched, in particular the area round the Farm safehouse. I never even save there because of that bastard hill. That was some damn fine racing round there though.... Anybody feel like plotting some race courses?  biggrin

I feel that the desert was also rather underused - Apart from the Area 69 mission. And the Green Goo mission. And the time trial with Toreno's monster truck  rolleyes

I wonder what the ruckus was all about with that Goo....

i think that as far as the cities go, they are well used in the missions, but I agree more could be done with the farm areas....When playing through GTA sometimes I can tell when something was in the game until right at the end, then dropped ( for instance, the animation at the end of the dates with the girls suggested that there was something there originally that had to be taken out......Huzzah hot coffee!) and the countryside felt a lot like that, and I was genuinely suprised at how short-lived the countryside was.

Another point for missions, though.... Everytime a new GTA is released, the promise of replayable missions that are open to be selected after being completed is renewed. This must be an excellent way to expand GTA's gamespan without repetitive side missions. Also, on another subject, someone posted the idea of a side mission whre some randomly spawned ped becomes a target and must be eliminated. Not only would this be amazing fun over and over, but as long as some set pieces ( such as the target travelling in convoy, or with guards, or different weapons or in special vehicles and some with/ without timers) prevented it from being repetitive, it would be a massively recievd idea in GTA, and would give players something to do over and over that isn't story based, can acquire money and would definitely make the game last a lot longer.
