| Hiya folks, I just had a few ideas for simplifying the board and thought I'd run them past you first. Feel free to say yay or nay or modify them to your tastes. 1. Remove the icons next to the posts, and instead, show text before the topic name. So if a topic was sticky and locked it would say [Sticky, Locked] before it. Advantages: * Takes up less space and no images to download. * Text is easier to understand than icons. Some of the icons aren't obvious. * Sticky topics already have "Sticky" before them, so it seems a bit redundant to say that and have an icon. * Less horizontal space taken up. 2. Remove the board etiquette topics? I'm not sure they're any use. I could just leave the one in the announcements forum. 3. Remove the pages bit after topics in the forum view? That's the bit in square brackets like [ New - 1 2 3 ]. They just seem a bit pointless to me. I imagine that people will always want to go to the first post (click on the topic name) or the last post (click on the > next to the last post bit). Although maybe the 'new' bit should be kept, to go directly to the newest post since your last visit. 4. Turn the front page into a combined view, that's kinda like an individual forum, but shows all the topics. This way people can see all the new topics straight away. Much easier for navigating than individually going through forums or opening lots of tabs/windows. The current front page could be kept as a "forums" page or something like that. 5. Maybe remove some of the stuff in the author boxes next to posts? All the info is available on the user profile page, which can be seen from clicking on the username. I'm thinking not displaying post count would make it less likely the new users would spam to get their post counts up. That kind of thing. 6. Remove the icq/interests/website/etc boxes on the edit profile page and having an empty textarea that you can put anything you like in. Board code could be used. The idea is that this allows more flexibility for people. For example, there are loads of instant messengers, so it doesn't make sense for me to have a box for all of them. Merry Christmas! ... Too early? Sorry. ------------------ ![]() |

| Sounds like good ideas to me. Especially like the idea of the combined view, I tend not to use it on other forums but here I think it'd work. Mainly because we don't get masses of traffic these days, and most of them are just Touge being Touge and 2na being 2na. But you know what I mean.. I wouldn't stress too much about decluttering though, seems fairly readable to me. Although I do look at it in widescreen so I guess with limited "screan real estate" it might be an issue? And er, ho ho ho. Can't say anything, have my first christmas meal tomorrow ;) ------------------ azz.gouranga.com est. 1998 (I am oldskoolier than joo) |

| Thanks Touge And thanks Azz for the reply! I've made some changes to the board (numbers relate to the first post): 1. I've removed the icons from the forum view and replaced with text. 2. I've fucking removed the board etiquette topics. 3. Slightly altered my idea of this. I've made the 'New' link appear on every topic that's been updated since the last visit. It jumps directly to the newest unseen post in that topic. People can also click on the topic title to go to the first post or the last post triangle to go to the end. 4. This one requires a lot more work so I've left that for now. I'll probably test it out as a seperate page first to see if people like it. 5. Not done this yet. I'm thinking I might need some flame proof armour before I try removing the post count or account numbers! 6. I've changed the layout of the profile page a little bit to make that easier later. I've also made a couple of other minor adjustments, like the preview posts on the reply page now line up with the 'code options' column. If people don't like any of these things I can always revert them back. www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/wso.php?url=http://gtaforums.com www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/wso.php?url=http://forums.gouranga. com ------------------ ![]() |

Usually I go to the first page, find out what the fuck I was talking about, then go to last page, plz return it. 4. What? I don?t see a difference, seems to work fine as is anywayz. 5. Doesn?t matter in the slightest, seems good to have SOME information their though. 6. Yeah, why not. ------------------ I hope you like me and I fit in with your life. |

| 1. I like the plain look of it... but that's probably I still remember DOS. 2. Reasonable. People do what they want to anyway. 3. I think you should put something similar to the ">" next to the topic title, this would a) mark a topic as being multiple pages and b) is an easier to find link to the last post. 4. Unsure about that one... would have to see it before I can say something. 5. keep it as it was.... Needles bans n00bs spamming up their post count anyway. 6. Great idea, I really like it. ------------------ -temporary placeholder for a new cool signature- |

| How about instead of having to click the little arrow jobbie, just clicking the topic title takes you to the last page with unread posts on? It must know, since it already tells me on the left if I have unread posts on previous pages. Would take the hassle out of my browsing, and frankly as I approach 30 I getting somewhat lazy ;) ------------------ azz.gouranga.com est. 1998 (I am oldskoolier than joo) |

| Thanks for the reply's people! Let's see... Needles said he liked the ideas, which automatically overrides every-- I mean, err *cough* there's a lot of opinions each way, so I'll leave the changes in effect for now so we can try the things out before reverting them too quickly. Combined forum view I've created that, it's located here. It shows topics from all the forums, ordered by the time of the last post. The idea is that you can easily see all the new stuff on one page, without going through all the different forums. What do people think about having that as the front page instead? The current front page would still be accessible from a different location. Topic page numbers I've modifed it slightly. It works like this now: Topic With 1 Page Topic With 2 Pages [ 2 ] Topic With 3 Pages [ 2 3 ] Topic With 4 Pages [ 2 3 4 ] Topic With 5 Pages [ 2 3 4 5 ] Topic With 6 Pages [ 5 6 ] Topic With 7 Pages [ 6 7 ] Topic With 8 Pages [ 7 8 ] So this is similar to the way it worked before, but there is no link to page 1, because clicking the topic name would do that. Until there are 6 pages, all the page links are shown. Including and after 6, only the last two pages are shown. Going to the last post The triangle to do that is located in the column on the right, before the name of the last author. Board etiquette topics We're all agreed they were useless, so they are permanently gone. User number next to posts I'd like to remove that, because I can't think of anything useful that it does. It kinda says how early the person was registered, but looking at the join date is a better indication of that. So I've removed that. Please yell at me if you would like it back and I'll revert that change. Individual replies Azz wrote: How about instead of having to click the little arrow jobbie, just clicking the topic title takes you to the last page with unread posts on? If you click the "New" link next to the topic, you'll magically be taken to the newest post since the last time you visited. Does that sound alright? Maindrian wrote: I love Icey and his tinkering. It shows he loves us. This is very true. Fradieb2 wrote: I think you should put something similar to the ">" next to the topic title, this would a) mark a topic as being multiple pages and b) is an easier to find link to the last post. That's a good idea, but I think I've sorted it with the adjustments to the page links. If people don't like how it works I might try something like that instead. Elxx wrote: Aaahhh, the forum looks so weird without the icons. It's more efficient Aye, it's a tiny bit less to download and it'll be better for people with very small screens or people who browse with sidebars and stuff. It also makes it a bit easier to create themes, because less icons are needed. ------------------ ![]() |

| Erm, not sure the combined view is completely correct. Tells me I posted in the admin section an hour ago, when the post date is 31st Oct. But other than that, lovely ;) EDIT: Hrrm, the normal main page tells me that entry is new too. Perhaps you were playing to test out the collation code? Either that or it's borked. Don't blame me, I touched nuffin. I like the NEW thing, all about streamlining the workflow donchano. And I learned a long time ago if you want to make any changes around this lot just do them, they'll bitch and moan no matter what you do. Of course in six months time you want to change it again, oh bitch moan we love it waah. Ahem. ------------------ azz.gouranga.com est. 1998 (I am oldskoolier than joo) |

| How about reverting to the old smiley patterns, or allowing both the current codes and the old ones? For example, people use :) all the time (even you!) but iceyboard doesn't turn it into the appropriate smilie. Typing  is a lot harder and less intuitive.IIRC, the reason for the change was occasional creation of unwanted smilies. If you figure out a way to parse them more intelligently, undesirable smilies should become extremely rare. And there's a disable smilies option if they do cause problems in any specific message which the author cares enough about. How about creating paragraphs and line breaks in the same way most blog comment systems do:
Allow simpler writing of lists! Using [list] with no attributes should create a normal <ul> element, with each line inside it being wrapped in an <li> element. Requiring users to know that Iceyboard requires a type attribute is too obscure, especially since it only takes CSS values for list types and disallows HTML values! How about adding a [c] BBcode which produces <code> markup? Then I could talk about Iceyboard's fiddly bits using semantically correct phrase elements in my messages. (EDIT) You could probably remove the Edit reason box. I think nobody uses it and this would save some scrolling to reach the message buttons. Oh, here's a picture of your position: fixed; sidebar working correctly in IE7:![]() 946 x 925, 113kB. IE7 still has stacks of CSS bugs but they managed to get a lot of useful stuff sorted out for the 7.0 release last month. ------------------
