i'll join the club, my decent computer (the only one in the house that can play games with decent graphics) recently ate shit....  the motherboard or something is fucked and they don't make the model anymore, which kind of sucks because i'm pretty sure some of my stuff won't fit in newer models..

ah well.

*goes off and plays goldenaxe on his wii*

Woot. Ok I'm temporarily suspending my membership of the club. My computer works! New mobo and all is dandy. Glad it wasn't me, since I asked the guy in the shop to give me something compatible. Meh.

So yeah, shiney new computer. Spent about 400quid on it, and I now have the core 2 duo 2.66ghz, 2gb matched ddr2 800, shiney new mobo (with heat pipe, which is better one assumes), x1900xt, oh and a sata hard drive, since I thought it'd be nice to join the new millennium at last.

Hurrah.

Just need to find something to play on it now that needs a bit more grunt than Dawn of War :)

Ta for all your help folks.

How come people knowledgeable about hardware have so many reliability issues with the stuff they buy? Do components wear each other out if you mix random manufacturers together?

My family has bought all our PCs (3 in total since about 1996) from Evesham Technology. They cost a pretty penny, sure. But once you've run them the first time, they just keep going for years without fuss. And when something wears out, such as the CPU fan or a memory stick, the 5 year warranty covers it. They send you a new part and a person to fit it for you.

Not having to faff around with hardware makes them worth the money, imho.

Can't run without a power lead, though!
