Hello,

Well I?m Finally buying a new computer,  doing away with the old 900mhz machine. It?s been a great little trooper for years but it?s about time I got an upgrade.

Here are the specs incase your interested.

64 Bit - Asus M2N-E Motherboard
64 Bit - AMD Dual Core AM2 4000+ Processor
Half a trig of (two 250gig Seagate) Hard drive (SATA)
Pioneear DVD Burners x 2(SATA)
ATI HiDef 2600XT 512DDR3 Graphics Card
DDR2 2048MB (2x 1 Gig) Of Memory
Acer 22 inch LCD Screen
Antec Black Case
Windows Vista Home Basic (64 Bit Edition)

Not bad for just 1,200 (au) plus I had to learn what the shit I was buying find the best prices ect.  This smashes all other computers from HP, Dell ect that would charge over 1,800 for all that.

Parts were chosen for price over performance (but I think I still did bloody well) I know DDR3 Ram is out now but I?m not going to pay 500 for a motherboard then another 500 for the same size in DDR3 Ram.  Plus It?s not like two gig worth of DDR2 is slow.

Orders been placed, pick it up on the weekend but if you have any thoughts of changes that I should make to end up with the best machine let us know, order can be amended.

That's a good rig tbh. It's far better than buying some brand name (hp, dell etc) thing that just won't live up to the price tag.

Nice, do have fun with some good games on it.

Stay the fuck away from ATI anmd AMD. They're shit and expensive.

For the CPU, i nthe UK you can get a quad core for ?170 what will overclock to 3.0GHz without breaking a sweat, and there are cheaper dual cores that'll do just the same. For GFX get an 8800 GT, it's faster than the current GTS 640 and much cheaper. Check reviews on Guru 3d or something.

Spending money on ATI/AMD at this moment in time would be regretable unl;ess they really are bargain prices compared to the competition.

You're also lacking any info about a PSU. You'll need a solid PSU. No need for a 1KW mental thing. But a decent branded PSU is needed. My friend bought some Hyper Type-r wotsit PSU and it wouldn't run his C2D system he just bought and then exploded. It was a brand new PSU. Corsair, Enermax and Antec are decent. Sure, no cheap, but my Antex Neopower 480 that I've had for 3 years ran said C2D system when we tested it, so you might pick one up cheap.

I had a hiper type-r thing that worked for about 2 years and went bang. So, I returned it (3 year warranty) and im gonig to sell it. Bought a better one.

AMD processors are good value. Intel are expensive. ATi are good on a budget, but Nvidia are better. To be fair, I'd say AMD and Nvidia. Intel chips cost too much and get far too hot. But, to each his own.

The 8800GT cost for $250-300 while in some benchmarks it's performance is quite close to the
8800GTX that cost $500-600.

Also do not get Home Basic, go with at least a Home Premium

Waaaa, the UK must be completely backwards when it comes to processors, AMD over ere is dirt cheap compared to Intel, about 200 bucks difference to get the same speed in Intel, then there is the motherboard.  Plus I have had a great time with my old AMD computer so I?m sticking with what I know.

PSU is er, unsure for the model number at the moment, it should be sufficient for all my parts - trust me, it's not bad.

As for the card I did want a Nvidia (all my graphics cards up to date have been Nvidia) but this ATI card was on special for about 120, it retails for well over most Nvidia cards elseware, I know it's silly to buy a part because it's "Cheaper then others" but it's got 512mb of DDR3 plus Hi Def and stuff, so it's not like it's crap.

Oh and Dada, spent the extra 20 bucks and got premium.

Gotta disagree Will, Intel chips are better for both price and performance than AMD chips.

They also run cool and overclock a tonne.

Nvidia's new 8800GT makes any current ATI cards worthless (performance is higher than that of ATI's best card, the HD2900XT, which costs about 70 quid more)

Doesn't really matter that it's got 512mb ram 2na, it's pretty crap: http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=706&model2=858& ;chart=318

How much is an 8800GT around your parts? These are shit hot right now.

And seriously, AMD are pretty crap now (this coming from a guy who swore by them)

    Thresh speaks something worthwile!!

i used to always swear by AMD. i bought nothing but AMD for myself and for every machine i built for someone else for years and years, but the new Core2Duo really blows AMD out of the water. i'm in absolute computing heaven - no joke, i LOVE this processor. it's got gobs of on-die cache with a FSB capable of stupid silly speeds, it just oozes top of the line performance. plus, it's a few watts more efficient - means less of a loud fan for you! i wouldn't buy anything but a Core2Duo now - and i almost want to shoot myself in the foot for loving an Intel this much. almost.

also, the 8800GT is an excellent chip. it's what i've got in my laptop, and i've never seen better graphics for the money. all of Orange Box is nothing but pure sex with full HDR rendering and all the settings turned to max - nothing but gorgeous, 80+fps eye candy while you're blowing zombies up and portaling yourself some cake. also, a lot of the new games (OB included) make use of the two, fully-independent cores - OB leaves one of them up to nothing but physics. it's a hell of a good time!

srsly. consider these two things. you won't ever regret it.

    OK fair point.

Your video card budget is pretty low though.

Ditch that cpu and get a Q6600, intel quad core cpu

I ordered parts for a new pc yesterday as it happens, I got:

Q6600 (quad, 2.4ghz goes to 3.6ghz on air)
    4gigs ram
    8800GT 512mb
and all other other uninteresting shit which added up to a lot of money (like motherboard, soundcard, cooler, case, dvd rw etc etc)

    Should arrive on monday..

Disco, you really got an 8800GT in your laptop? It was only released on monday, lol

    Good!  yes
To find out how much power you need use this
    handy utility
    Just use the lite version.

    As for the laptop it's a 8700M not 8800GT.

Oh right, that's a very different animal

8800GT is roughly the 3rd best card you can get at the moment.

8800Ultra is the best (and stupidly priced, bout ?380 - ?440, or $800 US)
8800GTX is next (also stupidly priced, bout ?300 or $600 US)
8800GT is marginally behind GTX (costs about ?160 or $350 AUD or $300 USD)
Ati HD2900XT is about here (about ?270, or $500+ US)
8800GTS is currently about here, although new releases will be faster than the GT (currently costs slightly more than the GT)

So there you have it. I know all this cos I just bought an 8800GT and did a bunch of research.

Much better choice on the graphics card.

I shouldn't squabble about that CPU, it's pretty good.

I'd still get an Intel though.

The Core 2 Duo E6600 is, according to charts, a similar performer to the 6000+.

However, you'll be able to overclock the E6600 from 2.3ghz to excess of 3ghz WITH EASE.

I know, you'll probably sigh, and think I'm some kind of fuckwit who sits at home strapping monstrous refridgerators to my computers (heh heh)

but you wouldn't even need any cooling other than the default shit, and you wouldn't even need to turn the fan up.

Also, your ram is really fast so would happily allow you to overclock the cpu.

I bought the same RAM as you btw, although I got it for 77 AUD for 2 gig, mwuhahah (was so cheap i bought 4gig)

    OK im going to bed.

i am sorry, i misquoted. it's an 8600GT, so, it's the same basic architecture of the whole 8-series lineup, minus a few pipelines and what-have-you.

it's still balls-out good, though, it exceeds all of Valve's minimum requirements for HDR.

      but, i digress.
