Ehehe. I just finished watching that last episode a few minutes ago.

When does the next series start with this new doctor?

Usually starts in the UK during/after March, no idea when it airs in the US but since I hear it's become something of a flagship for BBC America, it can't be too long afterwards.

I look forward to it with baited breath, Moffat's a fine writer and the new guy's got a great Pertwee vibe from the teaser and his first 30 seconds alone. Slightly gurny, but also not afraid to run into a room and PUNCH PEOPLE IN THE FUCKING FACE, or whack a Dalek with a spanner, just like Pertwee.

I do hope they give it a rest with the bloody sonic screwdriver though.

It'd be nice for a new season without a bloody Dalek as well, been done to death. New monsters would be great, RTD seemed to have some obsessions with throwing in things "for the old fans", and constantly made call backs and asides to the old stuff. Sure we get it, don't forget what it is, but give it a rest.

But then I have no respect for RTD's ability to write interesting conversation. Even his older stuff like Queer as Folk and Bob and Rose was somewhat staid when it came to the dialogue. Moffat on the other hand is supreme at witty banter (check out Coupling.. er the UK version obviously).

Just hope the Angels from blink don't become his Dalek equivalent popping up five times a season, they've been confirmed as one new ep apparently.

My two penneth.

Oh and yes the new guy does look erm, unique, but that's not the point now is it.

I've really never been a massive Who fan, too much slapstick i guess.

I've also got really sick of this current one being marketed to kids, with all this Sarah Jane nonsense as well.

I guess i just like my sci-fi dank, dark and depressive and with mild undertones of science.

Tom Baker.

You're totally right on RTD, Azz. While he did a great job of resurrecting this cruddy old dead show that nobody but hardcore nerds (Me) liked, his excesses have become a little grating. Like, the big series finale, there's always "A MILLION BILLION DALEKS/CYBERMEN/SCARY BALLS/MASTERS" and it'd be a big breath of fresh air to have something a bit more low key.

I'd also like a lot less of the "I'M FUCKING ACE, I AM" from the Doctor. Hell, there's a lot of things I'd like from Moffat, but maybe just toning it down and making it a bit more atmospheric would be good enough.

Honestly, I can't say I didn't enjoy the absurd OTT of the last two specials though.

EDIT: Wei, you might want to give early 80's Who a shot. More science, more atmosphere where it works and most importantly, a crapload of stories where pretty much everybody dies.

And Warriors of the Deep. But we don't talk about that.

(I HAVE THIS ON DVD, WHAT HAVE I DONE WITH MY LIFE.)

If you can find 'em, go for, Logopolis, Earthshock or Caves of Androzani, I'd hate to think I ended up sending you blundering into Snakedance or something terrible like that.

I've got the book versions of a couple of the early ones. Can't remember which now, one about Cybermen on the moon from Troughton's era I think, and erm, something else.

Anyway, much better sci-fi offering than these mainstream things in the current series. That's not to say I don't enjoy them, it's just they're very different.

They're always whinging in SFX (sci-fi mag) about how mainstream tv turns its nose up when accused of being sci-fi (like Flash Forward or Heroes or Lost), since they clearly have science fiction elements in them. I'm not sure I agree though, they're not real sci-fi.

Perhaps I'm more an elitist geek? It's not true sci-fi if the commonfolk like it. Tsk

I like hard science fiction, but I like the entertaining, goofy stuff as well and being somewhat of an obssessive fan, the history of the show does lean more towards goofy. That said, part of the reason the show died when it did was because they first took it too seriously, then they just sort of gave up even doing that and had the Doctor fighting angry Bertie Basset and it got goofy on a level that makes RTD look like Jimmy Mcgovern.

Also, Ken fucking Dodd.

One final series of awesome with Arthurian knights armed with laser guns, WWII vampires and the Master hanging around with fuzzy cat people was sadly not enough to save it, but damn if they didn't try. God bless you series 25, you went down fighting.

I didn't realize Tennant was going to be replaced until about a week ago, which was very annoying as I'd really grown to like the character he plays. My immediate reaction of the new guy is that he looks like an emo ponce, but I'm eager to give it a chance and see how he works in the show.

The tenth doctor's shows are the only ones I've watched. I'm trying to download a torrent of episodes from 1963 to 1989, but at 173 gigs, who knows if it'll get finished. My mom used to be a a big fan of Doctor Who around when I was born, I guess she'd be watching the Tom Baker episodes?

Having only seen it just recently, I really enjoyed Blink and wouldn't mind seeing more of those angels. A lot of elements from that episode seemed cliché, but damn did it fit together quite nicely. I was a bit on the edge of my seat.

I'd advise, if you ever get that lot, to go into them with a fairly open mind to the idea that, from the very beginning, they're making do. Like, in the early black and white serials, the cast is crammed into a very tiny studio with very little location filming and they're trying to create new worlds on a budget that would make Ed Wood curl up on the floor and weep. Then you have to factor in the fact that there was no money to be burning up film on retakes, so if old Hartnell flubbed a line, they just have to make do with it. Scenes are long and stagey, almost like theater, which fits in with how British TV worked at the time.

Even some of the very best stories have some silly rubbish. The Ark in Space, mid-1970's, utterly chock full of brilliant ideas, beats Alien to the punch by about five years (alien organism invading the body of its unwilling host, air ducts, etc.) and some fantastic dialogue... But the monster is made up of green bubble wrap.

I could go on far too long about Doctor Who and the history of it, so I should probably leave this topic alone. I have an embarrassing knowledge of the show that'd put Delfi's Trekkie knowledge to shame.

I love the cheese factor. Whether it's done intentionally for camp, or just because of a budget, it makes the show more fun. Even in the writing, the story isn't terribly concerned with being foolproof or without loopholes or even making a whole lot of sense. It doesn't let that stuff get in the way of having fun and being entertaining.

Only in the past few months have I really started to get into Doctor Who, so don't be embarrassed to unleash some encyclopedic nerdiness at any time to educate me on it.

Alright, fairy snuff, I shall unleash the science in a short list of bests and worsts for each Doctor, that way you know what to look for and avoid like the plague.

Hartnell - Watch : An Unearthly Child, The Daleks, The Rescue, The Time Meddler.
Avoid : The Romans, The Sensorites, The Web Planet.

Troughton - Watch: Any of 'em you possibly can, they're rare as fuck, thanks BBC.

Pertwee - Watch : Spearhead from Space, Inferno, The Sea Devils, The Daemons.
Avoid : Planet of the Spiders unless you really need to see how Pertwee dies.

Tom Baker  - Watch: Oh, Christ, too many. Take as many in as you can, but...
Avoid: Revenge of the Cybermen, Horns of Nimon, The Leisure Hive.

Davison - Watch : Castrovalva, Kinda, Earthshock, Enlightenment, Caves of Androzani.
Avoid : Warriors of the Deep, Snakedance, The Visitation.

Colin Baker - Watch : Uh... Vengaence on Varos, Revelation of the Daleks... That's it.
Avoid : All of Trial of a Timelord. Only watch Timelash if you want a laugh.

Mccoy - Watch : The Greatest Show in the Galaxy, Curse of Fenric, Battlefield.
Avoid : Time and the Rani, Delta and the Bannermen, Silver Nemesis.

Mcgann - AHA! Trick question. There's only one story, made in 1996 in a failed attempt
to revive the series as a joint BBC/Fox show. Very American, very slick, most
fans hate it, I think it's okay. Eric Roberts as the Master? SPOT ON, LOVE.

Eccleston - Watch : Dalek, The Empty Child/Doctor Dances, The Parting of the Ways.
Avoid : The ones with the farting aliens.

Tennant - I'm going to assume you've seen most of them, but bollocks, if you haven't
seen The Impossible Planet/Satan Pit or Midnight, give 'em both a whirl. And
never, ever, ever watch Fear Her. Ever.

I tried to keep it brief, which is bloody difficult for a show that's knocking on close to 50 years. As for the stuff I didn't list, you'll have to use your own initiative. Pretty much all of Tom Baker's run is worth a watch though, apart from the few I marked out.

I just saw Midnight the other day, that one was awesome. Gave me the chills a bit. My girlfriend was telling me I need to see The Impossible Planet, but we don't have it on tape anymore, so hopefully I can catch it eventually. I'm dying to download all the Tennant episodes, but I'm trying to wait until the 173 gig torrent finishes first. And hopefully those won't be shit quality! I'll be pissed off if after all that wait, the quality is intolerable.

I hate that catty whiner Donna Noble and laugh every time destiny screws her over. What an abrasive and annoying type of person.

Hehe, isn't there some rule about discussing warez and that stuff under penalty of ban?

Here's the torrent I'm working on (173 GB): isohunt.com/torrent_details/53293189/

And here's another, 201 GB this time, but it still only goes up to the same episode, the end of season 26 in '89. I haven't bothered to look through it to see if it's missing less episodes than the other torrent or something; or maybe it's higher quality. isohunt.com/torrent_details/76984241/
