I do hope they give it a rest with the bloody sonic screwdriver though.

I kind of like how the sonic screwdriver is such an unabashed plot device. Like I said earlier about the writing not needing to be airtight- whenever the Doctor's in a corner, he just busts it out and it solves an inconvenient roadblock so the story can move on.

A few times I've just had to laugh because of the silly and contrived uses for it.

I may be wrong on this one, but at the end of Rise of the Cybermen Part 1, they were all cornered by the cybermen and it ended on that cliff hanger, and in the first ten seconds of Part 2, the Doctor made them all asplode. Did he REALLY use the sonic screwdriver for that, or am I mistaken? That would is hilarious. Since when can it do that?

And in the episode following that, The Idiot's Lantern. When the Wire is trying to suck the Doctor's face off, he breaks the spell with the sonic screwdriver. Of course.

If they TRIED to make it make sense, it would annoy me. If they actually tried to convince you with some made up Star Trek science. But nope: nonsensical use of the sonic screwdriver, story moves on, I have a laugh.

Idiot's Lantern also had my favorite one liner: "Color television!"

He didn't use the sonic screwdriver on the cybermen, it was that little Tardis crystal thing he'd breathed life-stuff over earlier.

I suppose the sonic screwdriver does have its plus points. In a lot of the old stories, there'd be long and contrived scenes of The Doctor making up an escape route out of a bit of twig, a couple of magnets and a porno magazine or something. While some of that is funny, it's more often terrible padding, made so they can stretch that particular serial block out to 7 parts instead of 4. On the one hand, the sonic is a lazy plot device, on the other hand, it's a shorthand tool for moving things along a lot quicker, like you say.

There's shorthand and then there's just fucking stupid. I did a massive forehead slap at the end of Smith and Jones, when, after destroying the bloody screwdriver, he pulls out another one and grins.

It's really down to format. While the new series loses some things (characterization for a lot of the supporting characters usually), it also gains quite a bit in that they're punchy and fast and don't fuck around. I've sat through old-Who stories that I generally respect and enjoy for the most part, but pretty often I'll be at a mid-point and thinking "Fuck, two more episodes to go? HURRY UP AND GET TO THE POINT, CHRIST." Then Tom Baker will do some really awesome speech and it'll all be okay again.

And yeah, made up science is annoying as hell. Star Trek does that even worse than Doctor Who ever did, especially The Next Generation.

"Well, if we reconfigure the sub-space energy matrix, using radiation from the warp coils, we can re-ener..."

"SHUT THE FUCK UP GEORDIE."

oh, its basically just a magic wand. i recall at the start of the second part he uses it to shoot a couple of cybermen. which, of course, has never happened before or since

but i'm really looking foward to the new season. steven moffats episodes have been some of my favourites across all four seasons, and i'm getting really sick of russel t davies bringing back something from the old series, only to have them completely destroyed an episode later, followed by bringing them back using some absurd plot hole, over and over again.

Was anyone else disappointed at how the tenth doctor died? The radiation chamber thing was just so stupid. When they mentioned it earlier on in the show, I was just kind of "okay, that is an extremely poorly design". Later on when it killed the doctor, it was like a joke. It was just so contrived and anti-climactic. Although it was a nice touch for WIlf to be doing the knocking, though.

That stupid radiation chamber thing, it reminded me of Goldeneye level called Moonraker, where you had to launch the rocket. Underneath the rocket in the "exhaust bay" was a couple of those hokey computer consoles, so when the rocket launched, they would blow up. Why would anyone design anything like that?

I seem to remember that level being based on the movie Moonraker, which also had a bank of computer consoles under the rocket. In the movie, they sank into the floor and hid themselves or some crazy shit like that.

I do think the mechanism and set up for the death was incredibly daft in execution, but it paid off simply for the whole "I'm not dead!" *tap tap tap tap* moment, which was pretty damn good.

I gots me some more Old-Who on DVD, a couple of black and white ones, The Aztecs and Seeds of Doom. Looking forward to blasting through both, the last new Who dvd I brought was ages ago and it was a really poor Davison one called Four to Doomsday. It really says something about how poor an episode is when the only highpoint is the theme tune starting up. That and Adric getting treated like the tosspot he is by the Doctor.

My favourite version by far. I just like the way it goes "rrrrrrrrrumbly bum". 80's as hell, but what of it?

oh, the whole two episodes were shit. why bring back the timelords, just to kill them off 5 minutes later?

if you simply took the footage, edited out every reference to them as well as that 20 minutes of terrible 'cameos' you'd probably end up with a decent serial, barring wilfred staring into space whilst music plays

173 gigs of Doctor Who. Finished. Fuck yeah.

I've only watched the 100,000BC 4-parter but my questions are obvious.

Why is the Doctor such a dottering old useless cynic and who the hell is this "granddaughter".

Apparently the granddaughter is explained in the Tennant episode Fear Her, which Mandy has advised me to never, ever, ever watch.

So I'll just make up my own explanation.

Yeah, I thought you'd find the Doctor's early attitude pretty mad. I'm surprised you didn't mention the bit where he picks up a big rock and prepares to STOVE A CAVEMAN'S HEAD IN WITH IT until Ian puts his foot down. He does soften a lot as the series carries on, but doesn't really become the character we all know and love until Susan's gone. The Time Meddler is a pretty good instance of Hartnell just totally pimping off with the story.

As for Susan, she doesn't outright get a mention in Fear Her. The line is runs something along the lines of "Oh, I had a family once. I was a father." Then Rose starts to ask questions and he quickly changes the subject. I like to think the mysterious woman in The End of Time is possibly Susan too, simply because I can't think of who else it could be.

Along these old black and white lines, I quite enjoyed the Aztecs DVD. The first instance of the Doctor insisting that time is a fixed line and should not be fucked with and he really takes command in these scenes. Also, quite shockingly, he gets all romantic with an Aztec lady. They nearly get married! RTD, YOU'VE RUINED DOCTOR WHO!!!

Seeds of Death was pretty weak.

Thus far I've found Ian more the hero of the story; he seems to be the voice of compassion, reason, as well as the man with the plan and the guts.

I'm starting off by watching the episodes you recommended on the first page, instead of sitting through all of them in order and not being able to check out all the doctors.

What are your, say, top five favorite Tom Baker episodes?

P.S. Susan is a slammin hottie.

Top five Bakers? That's a bloody difficult one...

Robot - Regeneration story, utterly daft, the Robot of the title is laughably crap. It's more junky b-movie stuff than proper good, but I love it regardless. I never fail to smirk at the toy tank moment. Oddly, you get a pretty good idea of what the latter half of John Pertwee's time on the show was like from this.

The Face of Evil - The Doctor meets Leela, a barbarian sexpot who likes to kill shit. Another daft one, but it's from arguably the best period of the show and Leela makes for a pretty good companion as time goes on.

The Robots of Death - This is just fucking brilliant. The more I say, the more I'll spoil it, so I'll just say there's some robots and there's some death.

City of Death - I've never cared to count how many stories are titled "The _____ of DEATH!" but this is pretty good too. Written by Douglas Adams and has his fingerprints all over it. Tom Baker's at his witty best, clearly having fun with the whole deal, as this scene quite clearly demonstrates...

There's a great chemistry between Tom and his Time Lady companion Romana. You often get the impression she's far more intelligent than him and suffers all his goofy behavior with a quiet smile. I reckon this is the era RTD tried most to emulate, the whole running about, hand in hand, time travelling for larks thing.

Logopolis - Tom's last shout, probably an odd choice, but does give you a fair look at how the show changed over the 7 years Tom was in it. Robot was fairly goofy. Logopolis was doomy, deadly serious stuff. It's another one of those ones that is flawed, but I personally love it anyway. Plus, you get Anthony Ainley as the Master, in full on cackling idiot "LETS DESTROY THE UNIVERSE!!" mode. And Tegan. I like Tegan. That air hostess uniform gets me hot.

Honourable mentions for Genesis of the Daleks and Pyramids of Mars. Both good, both big fan favourites, but neither ever really blew my socks off. Still, Genesis is about as good an origin story as you can get. Davros rocks.

PS. I agree, but seeing her waving scissors about and cackling madly does dampen the fires somewhat.

i kind of wish the new doctor would be some grumpy old man again

i'd agree, picking good tom baker just becomes a list of all of his serials. except maybe 'the deadly assasin', which mainly consists of him breaking the forth wall, but even then, the badness is great

other tom baker classics:

the ribos operation - first with romana, and first of the 'key of time' arc
the pirate planet  - another key of time, by douglas adams, therefore as good as city of death
genesis of the daleks - epic serial seeing the begining of them

i'm personally a fan of just about anything with sarah jane, leela, romana (in particular, romana 2) or tegan

which is, co-incidently, pretty much every episode of tom

I don't mind The Deadly Assassin, but The Invasion of Time is a pain to sit through, once the Doctor stops pretending to be a megalomaniac and the Sontarans show up and it all turns into a giant Benny Hill chase sequence through the Tardis.

And I forgot the Pirate Planet. Probably one of my favourite "Angry Tom" moments in that.

"THEN WHAT'S IT FOR!?"

Does any body have any experience burning DVD's? I want to burn your suggested highlight episodes onto DVD's as a gift for the person who got me into Doctor Who, but none of them come out quite right.

The program that came with Windows burned a DVD with perfect aspect, but no audio at all for some reason.

I downloaded a program called DVD Flick, but it sizes them a bit squished, doesn't fit the television, and I dunno how to adjust the settings.

lawl, I've been using Nero 6.6 for a long time, and it doesn't even burn DVD movies. Do the newer versions have a good system?

I remeber having a simmilar problem myself a while ago, I think i settled on a program called something along the lines of EZdvd creator. I can't swear by that, but i remember that it allowed you to set the aspect ratio at the very least.

I've just started watching The Ribos Operation thanks to OJ's suggestion. I haven't seen the Key to Time season in ages. K9. Oh dear. Romana 1. Hooray!

Tom appears to have herpes in this one. He's so damned good regardless.

Edit: Oof, that first cliffhanger is dumb.

Edit 2: HOLY FUKKEN SHIT, DRAMATIC HAT PUTTING ON MUSIC.

Edit 3: "Romana, you can't be a successful crook with a dishonest face, can you?" I'm loving this. I swear that's my last edit, I'm going to bed after this part. It's 7 in the morning and I'm a bit pissed.

The two Dalek movies for US viewers, courtesy of Lionsgate. Alas, not available in the UK. Doesn't bother me too much, I've seen these far more than I'd like to, but if you're curious, it's an interesting little diversion into a world where the Doctor is a crazy old loon who made the Tardis in his back yard for... Some reason. Lest we forget, the second one features a young Bernard Cribbins as a companion.

APRIL 3rd, GET HERE SOON.
