JJHW Joined: Feb '03 Posts: 1,058	Hey, here's (what I think) is a good idea for a topic, please take it semi-seriously, haha. For me it was my first experience of an online community, more than that it was the first time I'd ever created custom content for a game and also the first time I'd used Photoshop for something closer to it's full potential. I remember getting GTA (the cheap fiver 'SoldOut' copy). Got it home, stuck it in, had a play around on it. Within a few days I started to search for possible custom content and I found forums.gouranga.com. I registered after lurking on the boards for a bit. I decided to make a Renault Laguna, it was a fairly lackluster attempt, but I was new to it, I was having fun. I carried on making cars, meeting friends (Maindrian, Mademan, JRS21, Phoenix, etc... I even went and stayed with JRS21 for a week in Leeds) and generally thinking this was great. I remember joining the GTA2 mod GTA:London 2001, making an Iveco Ambulance and a Ford Mondeo cop car. I remember following Patto's tutorial and Azz's tutorial and developing my skills. I used to look at GTAKreyz's cars and stare in wonder, how did he do it? Alfadog too. I sent a car I'd done to GTA Warehouse and hadn't specified a name for myself, but my name on my email was 'JJ HW' (my initials) and so I used it as my screen name. I started my own site, GTA-Docks.co.uk, which I had a huge over-the-top unrealistic ambition to have people's car driving around on. I wrote lots of mouthy reviews, using the word 'mate' a lot, just because it seemed part of the scene lingo, I never said it in real life before, still don't. I eventually got a reviewer's position at the almighty GTAzz, doing the GTA1 section with Paul, just after GTA3 came out. I loved doing those, looking back, way too much of the 'mate' again, I hate that in real life, as I said. I was seriously saddened when I didn't have an internet connection for a time and when I returned, the scene I loved had dwindled and was on it's way out, the vibrant, funny, passionate, exciting scene built around an incredible series of games. Sure, I hung out on GTAForums, but Gouranga has and always will be my 'home' on the internet. Sure, I hung out on GTAForums, but Gouranga has and always will be my 'home' on the internet.

There's something very comforting about logging into MSN and having him greet me with "YOU LIKE MEN". Then we'll kick back, casually insult one another, he'll show me pictures of his cars and talk about Charles Bronson. Or I'll just jabber aimlessly about the latest show or film I'm into (I MEAN IT DAN, WATCH DEXTER, YOU'LL LOVE IT). Some other evenings, he'll come up with a mad idea. Or I will. Or whatever. I'm sure he really sees me as something of a pest, but I find him too funny to not talk to. Then there's Knott. I often argue with Knott, he's an uppity bugger, but despite what he may think, my ribbing is usually of an affectionate nature. It's great when we get a proper angry music fight going, where he'll get all snobby and I'll get all self righteous. We're in agreement on as many things as we argue about though, like how Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Mr. Drake is a really bitchin' album. There's the occasional chat with Frag and a few other of the guys. Just the other day, Dup messaged me some shock porn thing. Can't even remember what it was, I just sort of clicked it, went into action to get the fucking thing off my screen, whatever it was. For a long time it gave me something to do and a bunch of weird fuckers to talk to, which was nice. When GTA3 was released it all really ended for me. I'm a bit hopeless at visiting the site these days. Adam sometimes MSNs me but I'm usually busy doing some worthless shite and don't make very good conversation. Sorry about that Adam :D

Around the turn of the millenum though the G! scene meant loads to me. I really enjoyed the buzzing atmosphere and the 2D scene. I'd agree with Azz that the release of GTA3 in late 2001 was the beginning of the end.

What does it mean to me in 2010? Mostly just nostalgia. I like seeing other people post on the forums because it shows it's not totally dead, but I don't generally post anything.

Way back when, G! meant modification of the Grand Theft Auto series but more GTA III / Vice City for me. I remember this one was one of the first forums I had ever visited and, looking back at my first few posts, it was where I learned to spell. Now however it's a place to come chat every once and a while but the forum's practically dead now which is a tad sad. I miss Elxx, RYS, uhh...Fordy...and the rest (sweet rhyme too!)

I'm already friends with Jerome and RYS, and I think I found Alfalfadog, unless there are other Lachlans out there with MX-5s, but I've forgotten the full names of Andy, Adam, Dan, etc...

I consider most of you my friends, and not entirely because I lead a sad, lonely life. Would be fun to keep up with you lot through pictures and status updates and that kind of gay stuff.

It meant i had to download and install ICQ

I miss the troublemakers, Groovealex, posting images of giant spunking cocks with gay abandon and the like.

A lot of the knobends were fun to rile up. Teknics seemed to explode at any given opportunity where I was involved. That American kid a few years back was fun as well. Then there was that guy I annoyed so much, he posted an image of my face pasted onto a corpse. Jolly good innocent larks for all.
