Sob, I miss my old turntable. Doesn't make much difference really, since all my Queen records are warped. My copy of Double Fantasy by John Lennon is still in great nick though.

Right now, I just use the computer for everything, with a tiny cd player for when I want music in bed. But, I have a nice hi-fi, still in its box. I just don't have anywhere to put it at the moment, or any desire to piss about putting it together.

Direct drive turntable, do want! tongue

It's actually a belt-drive, the whole belt mechanism is hidden quite well under the turn-table though.

Oh that's crazy, I've never seen a belt driven turntable with the dotted patterns and light on the side, plus it's a Technics so I thought for sure it would be direct drive.

I don't remember exactly what the dots and light are for, but isn't it about slowing down and reversing the record, which would be damaging to a belt driven turn table? I don't know- what are those things there for again?

The dot pattern and the light are there to adjust the speed within a certain range so that it will be exactly 33 1/3 (or 45) rpm. There is a slider that adjust the speed of the motor, and you have found the correct speed when the dot pattern in front of the light appears to be standing still. The reason they added this is because the motor speed is synchronized using the AC frequency from the mains (50 Hz in Europe, 60 Hz for the US), but this frequency is not that precise.

As the total adjustment in speed is in the range of +/- 3%, it doesn't really matter if it is belt driven or direct drive. If I'd try to scratch or stop the record with my hands on a belt drive, it would surely damage it though.
