They're wildfires. There are a lot of trees and some pretty wooded areas, but Texas is a pretty dry place (even without the help from this devilish drought).
What's interesting is just how quickly these fires spread. They don't so much spread as they just EXPLODE. All of the deader-than-doorknob trees are like shaved kindling - and they've been dried out for nearly a year (January was the last measurable rainfall in many parts of Texas), so it's like cheating with lighter fluid and strike-anywhere matches. The trees just get ENGULFED.

Anyway, I was going to say that I guess I can't make fun of California for being perpetually on fire anymore. This shit sucks. |
