| No problem in Germany, but apparently Norway (where I was for Christmas) has a large lack of butter. The reason for that is a wierd combination of circumstances, basically the fact that in Norway, there is only one (half state-owned) company producing dairy products and thus has a monopoly. The last summer was rather cold, so there is less food for cattle available now, so this company reduced their production. Unfortunately, everybody in Norway seems to be doing some kind of Atkins Diet, which has raised the consumption of butter by 30%. As a result, Norway had a real lack of butter during the last month, which lead to people offering butter over finn.no (some sort of Norwegian craigslist) for 70$ per pack (1/2 pound).
The wierd thing is that Norway is surrounded by countries all having an overproduction of dairy products, so it was a huge mistery why they didn't just import butter from Denmark or Sweden.
EDIT: it even was on the Colbert report, I hope the link works. ------------------ -temporary placeholder for a new cool signature-
