Anyone follow oval track racing etc? I don't usually but I'll tune in for the Indy 500 tomorrow.

Me? I'll be rooting for Wheldon, mainly because he's English, but also because if he keeps his head, he could do it. He has placed fifth with 229mph on the qualfier, but on a practice he put in the fastest lap of the day at 231.

Should be an interesting race, if you're in the UK and have Sky it's on Sky Sports 3, tomorrow at 4.30pm. I shall be watching :)

Wheldon is wanting to do the same, I was reading an interview with him and apparently he karted with Montoya, he tried to go the Formular route but couldn't get the sponsorship and so went over the pond to race Indy Cars.

I don't like this style of racing.  The German oval race at that insane tri-oval where Zinardi ended up needing both his legs amputated beneath the knee had some really frustrating racing going on.
The fact that you are racing permanently in the disturbed air of the car in front (which has been vortexed up from the venturis) means that to overtake you've got to get close on the exit of a turn.  But with such high speeds, there's no downforce to be had to get the corner speed.
What's worse, is that because the cars are so finely optimised for racing at a basically static speed, they simply can't overtake.  All the turns are to the left so you can't take an imaginitive line to get by, or to defend.
I mean even F1 makes for more interesting passing - saw Barrichelo trying to get by Raikkinnen (sp? on both) around the A1 ring was a better act of driving than the German race.  There was one guy who was clearly the fastest, and who made a single, gradual line change down each straight (as is legal) from outside to inside to prevent himself getting overtaken by the guy drafting him round.
Now this guy gets a 5 second penalty because of this LEGITIMATE racing...but the dumb as fuck US officials that get flown out there mess up the timing, the guy stalls and in effect gets a 30 second penalty.

Now he drives like stink off a stick for 100 laps and gets onto the tail of the guy that was following.  Now this guy is jinking real suddenly to the inside off each turn, and drifts high when the guy now in second tries to pass.  But no penalty for him as theres only 15 laps to go and it wouldn't be as an add-on to a pit stop.

Indy racing league has poorly enforced rules which are anti-competitive.  The oval style of racing also prevents good drivers making places because it's so easy to defend when all the corners are the same.

Say no to ovals!

This kind of racing provides yet another reason for this board to include the "thumbs-down" smilie.

As long as its interesting il watch it, most types of racing have there advantage.  Oval racing has lots of crashes, touring cars and GT have wheel to wheel racing, formula one has its tactics and overtaking but aslong os it has some form of excitement il watch it!

So, did anyone watch it?

Very interesting race I think, I didn't see De Ferran winning it at the start, but it was a deserved win. I bet Castroneves was a little sour as he was hoping for the three-peat I think, but 2nd was still respectable.

My fave driver? Had to go to Kanaan, he had some immense laps and some crazy passing maouveres, especially coming off a yellow flag back to a restart, he was three abreast and passed both drivers at once point, daredevil.

Little disapointed to see Sarah Fisher drop out so early, I wasn't aware women raced in the US with men, and it would have been interesting to see how she handled thing.

Only other thing to comment on is Wheldon, I was a little disapointed with him, he raced well at the start, and was second at one point, but then things went sour. He blocked a lot when he shouldn't have, and although it was sad he spun out, I can't help thinking he got his commupence, there are talks of a fine as well for some of his antics. It's all a shame, if he had kept his head he could have got rookie of the year.

Opinions?
