Not too sure how they do it in Australia, but in the states if you pass while it is yellow and it turns red while you are in the middle of the intersection, you can still be ticketed.

u sure about that? in NJ (i was told this in a defensive driving course the DMV forced me to take, bastards) that once you pass the "stop line" at a lighted intersection, while the light is not red, you can pass through without being ticketed.

Meaning if it's still yellow when you cross the "stop line" and it turns red before you et to the other side you're fine.

However if you actually speed up when the light is yellow then it's considered ticketable (my car has a switch for the brake lights, once the light goes yellow on goes the brake lights but i press down the accelerator hehe, it's worked in court dont knock it "sir my brake lights were on correct...then HOW was i accelerating, i wasn't.....  exactly")

Also random side note, if a light turns red and you stop PAST the stop line it's considered running the red light. There's a light in our town where the stop line is like 50 feet away from the light, cops sit there and walk up to people's windows while they're stopped and give out tickets, it's a hilarious occasion when you know ahead of time where to stop.

Could differ from state to state, my brother has gotten tickets for driving by on yellow and getting red in the middle of the intersection.
btw, where did you get that switch for the brake lights?

Not sure on the laws in Australia, but were I'm at. If you enter an intersection when the light is red. You get a $280 ticket. They have those cameras all over the city where I live, and I know which ones not to run . I've heard of people trying to fight the ticket, but if they have a picture of you running a red light, You're better off pleading guilty and paying the fine.  :()

i made the switch, it's rather simple.

Your brake lights are turned on by something mounted on your brake pedal (the actual metal shaft). On my car it's basically a plastic plunger in a box. When pushed all the way in (pedal is up, brakes off) the metal contacts inside don't touch, wala brake lights off. When the plunger is moved a slight bit (i think it's like 10% movement or something) the metal contacts meet and greet and walaa brake lights on. All i did was figure out which two contacts had to connect to turn on the lights (using a voltemeter). Strip the plastic off both wires. Ran one wire to one prong of a switch, one wire to the other prong of the switch, and also split a 12v power line to the 3rd prong of the switch.

tada brake light switch is done. Hide it tho, if a DMV inspection station sees it you fail, i think. lol, the dmv HATES seeing any switches in cars, assholes.

a switch hooked up to your brake lights?? lololol

I've always wondered about this. I assume you shouldn't be able to be ticketed unless you PASS the stop line after the red light goes.

Not sure about how it really is though...

In good old great britain if its orange u can pass threw it.  New drivers (like me) are taught to treat any lights as red.  If its green it could change, if is orange and you can make the line without endangering yourself my stopping fast then its ok to pass it.  Here peeps arent to bothered about that, i mean i only know one set of lights round here that have red light cams.

I see yellow lights as green, in large cities peopl expect you to carry on through them, if you stopped you'd probably get 12 cars up your arse.

They used to use the moving the line trick around here until people took it to court and complained. Now the lights have to be so far away from the line max. Considering the amount of fundraising speed cameras we have, it's strange a judge actually siding with drivers. It probably singles the end of the world!

In Aus if you're in on an orange you're fine.

Hell, even if you're in a T-section and you've entered the intersection, and you can't find a gap in traffic to make the turn and the light goes red, you have right of way. Seriously.

If you get a ticket, take it to court, you'll prolly win.

Same here Neo, I've been caught in cross hatched intersections before, they are a bitch when the lights change very quick and you can't get out. Most of the camera's in large cities in the UK are live, therefore you would have evidence you couldn't get out if you were ticketed, and a benevolent camera guy could hold the lights a second to let you through. Although I think they'd rather leave you there to get crushed by a truck!

What would happen if you do take it to court and still get found guilty?

In the UK they punish you so hard for excercising your rights its not worth it, a clever way of bullying by our "judicial" system.

If the fine doesn't increase or you don't have to pay signifcant court costs, and have a case, take it. However if you are guilty then you should simply pay up and take it as a lesson learned.

our courts remember you, as do the cops, and they simply wage a personal war against your license when you challenge stuff. Mainly because it's so easy to win in court with all the loopholes in our laws.

Ah, when I see a yellow light, I stop. That simple. What am I going to loose just because I had to stop one more time?

Unfortunately, most ppl don't think like that in here too, so I always have to check wether the guy behind me is accelerating or not.

If I have enough money someday though, I'm gonna get me an offroader, like a Defender or something, this way I don't have to look back, I just push the brakes real hard and hope the guy crashes behind me. mehehehehe!!!

Some crazy liberal guy (name me a liberal who isn't crazy though?) wants to ban people using 4x4s for short journeys because the "intimidate" people.

Anyone who is scared of a bigger vehicle probably shouldn't be on the road, but how exactly is he going to decide what a short journey is? This is why liberals scare me, they'd have us all riding horses if they got their way!
