Hey all you awesome car makers out there - thought I might give you something to work with. You see, I don't actually have GTA but I'm sure finding it fun to draw them.

So anyway, I sat down with the intentions of making an F-150 XLT (the truck I drive in real life) but let my imagination take over and pretty soon I turned out a 2001 Lightning.

Problem is I don't know a darn thing about how to get it into the game or making the deltas for it, but I do have the main body drawn out.

This is the first car I've ever drawn, it's from scratch, and right now only comes in red. Here's the pic of it:

http://www.alturasforums.com/images/crucible/lightning.gif

Please feel free to give reviews. I keep going back to it to modify it (lately I've been concentrating a lot on the hood, which I'm still not happy with but much happier with than before).

If you'd like to pick up where I've left off (and make some deltas for it so it can be used in the game), please let me know - don't just take it without asking me. I have put about four hours of work into this, and I'd like to have a little credit. :)

like RRC pointed out, it's pretty good. for newbie anyway (you are new right?). it's got a lot of bits i like (fairly good shading for a new comer).

If you intend on learning to make deltas (go on, you know you want to) Azz has a tute on deltas which is probably the best out there.

oh and keep at it, i can see a great car maker in you.

Thanks, Mademan. That was a pretty awesome review that'll give a newbie like me (and yes, I am one) inspiration for the future. I suppose I should get my hands on a copy of GTA so I can actually play the game. I'm sure I'd have more fun drawing cars for the game instead, though. :D

I like the little flare on the rear fender, too. They jut-out like that on the lightning. I noticed other car makers put some lighting flare near the rear (just a little), so I thought a sharp bend on the side there would make it look real cool. Besides, that's my favorite part as far as the lighting goes. :)

Also, for those of you who don't know or want to compare, here's a picture of a real 2001 Lightning SVT:

Thank you FordF150.Net. :D

Thats VERY good for a first car! Just keep your car clean and not smudgy and you'll have a good future here.

This is a damn good first car in my opinion, id have been proud to make this as a first car...

Its probably a better first car than most people here, myself included  :D Well done Rickk

Ok here are some things that could help:

1) Front lights look a little too much like greyed out blurry blobs... perhaps you could add some orange colour?

2) The back...im not sure what it is supposed to be...a pickup back? If so, then you should add some vertical shade lines in the back, to show a kind of grille thing that pickups have. Sorry I cant explain, but look at decent pickup around here and you should see what i mean.

If its not meant to be a pickup type back, then you need to make more obvious what it is, i.e. by shading it a little.

Some of the highlights are a little smudgy, but this should be easy to clear up. Your shading is great considering your lack of experience. Did you use a tutorial? If so whose tute? :D

The back window is one pixel deep and is the only thing i dont like...it simply doesn't feel right. Im not sure what you can do with that, but you could either - make more of the back window visible OR remove it completely...

Finally some parts seem a tiny bit blurry... Im sure you can clean it up a little...

The back wheel arches look nice.

Good work, post an update sometime.

Hey, thanks guys! I appreciate all the support. I'll try doing those things and seeing how it turns out. I should be able to post an update this evening if I get the chance. :)

The front headlights were once very pronounced on the front, and I thought it looked dumb so I dulled them down. I'll re-add some careful highlights and make the orange (yes, there's a little on the sides - it just gets blurred into the red now) brighter.

The back has a bed cover on it, like most Lightnings do. I suppose I can make a real sharp 1-pixel bevel along it or I suppose I might remove it and go with a traditional truck bed in the back.

I once took a look at a tute for a few minutes, got the footnotes, and then went look at cars for a few days. Generally, though, I was just using my memory and trying to mimic the techniques I saw in the very best cars. :)

On the back, over the rear window (at least on my F-150), there is the top lights. From the overhead perspective, the assembly could possibly block the rear window. I might replace the rear-window with this light if it does look really bad. Whata think?

if you're looking for a copy of gta, maybe try freeloader. not sure if they still have a free one for download though (and if they do, if it's any good).

I'd also point you in the direction of a few good tutes, but most of them've dissapeared (Dope's and JRS's).

Anyone know where I could find Dope's tutorial?

btw, the truck looks pretty good, the shape is excellent in my opinion.

Seems to me like it's blurry at the front and too long...

Other than that, it's pretty ok for a first car!;)

I thought the length was pretty good. I didn't want it looking like a MicroMachine :D

I'll do something with the hood, too, because that's one thing that's really bugging me too. Looks like it slopes downward to the front - any suggestions? Some highlights to the front of the hood?

Also, I'm looking into getting a copy of GTA from Amazon. I hope the DOS version works with WinXPPro.

In the meantime, though, I'd like to make some deltas for the truck. I might use one of the tutes for delta making tips. What car should the truck replace? Is there a truck in the game? Would mine fit it? So many questions, I know... :)

Okay! Whew! I made deltas for it! I had no idea how tough that was. I think I'm finished with the truck, but now still need to add it to the game (which I still don't have - but getting soon).

So here it is, with all twelve deltas shown (plus one that I was just messing around with, heh):

http://www.alturasforums.com/images/crucible/lightning2.gif

So, for a first car, what do you think with the finished product?

If anyone would like the PSD file so they can manually add it to the game (I don't even know what car it would replace), let me know. It's pretty small - I can probably e-mail it to ya. :)
