I'm kinda new to the multi player mode of playing. I posted this question here cause I believe there are many experienced people here who might know the answer. I want to play GTA 1 multi player mode but I can't get it work.

We have 2 computers connected by USB cable and we want to play local multi player game (not over the internet). So I guess I need to choose Serial connection (correct me if I'm wrong, other options are: Modem, IPX TCP/IP connection). After I created new session, the new window opens. The screenshot is here, I also added all the options available:

I press OK and wait. But the other person (on the second computer) can't join the game. He doesn't see the new game session and my computer doesn't find any new joiners, of course. I believe I need to configure the settings on the "Serial connection" window but I don't know how. I don't know much about ports, bound rates and that kind of stuff. Hope someone will be able to tell me what should I do to make it work.

Maybe it's because you're using a USB cable, lol.

Try TCP/IP.  USB could be a problem, there are ways to network computers with USB but it's rarely done.   Serial is meant for RS232 serial ports and not for USB.

Sorry, my mistake - we are using UTP cable.

use TCP/IP, serial connection is when you connect the computers with some stone age rs-232 connectors.

I've already tried TCP/IP and it didn't work well... But I will try to use RS232 connector, like you said,  as soon as I get the right cable. I'll let you know if ti worked.  biggrin

I don't recommend using RS-232 anymore but if you must try it then you'll need a null modem cable.  If TCP/IP isn't finding your opponent then it's probably a firewall problem.  GTA1 also requires all players to use the same version of Windows or it will instantly go out of sync.

Yeah I realize that this serial connection is a really old stuff. I've already tried TCP/IP and it found my opponent but it disconnected a few seconds later. Thanks for the information about the Windows versions - this could be a problem cause we were using the different versions. I would much rather use TCP/IP but I read somewhere that the packet size and speed of TCP/IP is not well-suited to GTA, and this communication type is NOT recommended. That's the only reason why I'm thinking about buying this null modem cable. So have anyone here ever successfully played GTA 1 over the internet - using the TCP/I? And what do you think about GTADS (http://gtads.blogspot.com/). It looks like a useful program for playing the game over the internet.

I played gta1 with multiplayer mods over tcpip and it worked fine on dialup.
