G! Ghost town?

Hello.. anyone out there?

I'm new here.

Was reading Jacked: The Outlaw Story of GTA and read about Gouranga.com.

I was expecting a healthy plum community here but looking at the last post dates spooked me out.

So the question.... What happened? Why does it feel so deserted?

It's sort of active, it's more a old boy's club now.

Re: G! Ghost town?

Ooh, let's dish! What did the book say about us? Are we awesome or what?

I can tell you exactly what happened; 3D happened. G!'s glory days were very much centered around modding the old 2d games, which, when it came down to it, amounted to little more than teensy little .bmp (I don't think that was the format, but fuck it, memory says it's so...) cars. I can't even remember the pixel size, but it's pretty laughable now in this age of super high resolution graphics. What you had was a community of motoring davinci's making these lovely shiny things out of the teensiest number of pixels.

As soon as GTA3 came out, while there were a few token stabs at keeping up, general interest died and not because the game was bad, more because we were, at heart a modding community. Moreover a modding community that for the most part tinkered with pixels and photoshop, rather than the now more common meshes and textures and blah blah blah. That's how it works isn't it? I don't know, I've never actually tried.

Members disappeared slowly over time, now what's left is, as Wei says, a bit of an old boys club. It became a bit of a policy for a while to outright lambast and scorn new kids (I blame Needles). Now it's just a place where old internet chums hang and fuck about. And Touge. And even then, for those of us left, we're more than likely to be conversing over MSN or Facebook. For a more indepth history of the place, you'd be wanting to hear from Azz, Alfa and maybe Needles (Although I'd watch him, he's an unprincipled scoundrel). I'll think about giving them a shout.

So yes, it's kind of a sad state these days, but as empty as it is, I'd be even sadder without it. Not only because I can ban people. Who knows, one day, maybe a whole new load of people will find us. Probably not, but it'd be a laugh. I'd have a hell of a lot of fun reversing Needles' unjust banning at any rate.

And banning Disco once a week. Or changing his username, that never gets old.

Re: G! Ghost town?

Haven't you read the book already? Gouranga.com is referred many a times. Sam Houser used to shoot emails here for this was the place where all GTA fans gathered. I've been a member at gtaforums since almost a year and I can say that the community is blooming well even without most members being modders. I heartily wished this ORIGINAL fan site to be much ahead than any other.

Also, this link http://www.who.is/website-information/gouranga.com/ shows that
its owned by Rockstar Games which made me expect that this was the official GTA forum.

What can I say?
Can't this place be advertised more?
When GTAV got announced, gtaforums had hundreds of new members coming.

Re: G! Ghost town?

I can't agree with Wei, more members to a place = More excitement and general tomfoolery. I do miss the general chaos this place used to court, as much as it probably drove up the blood pressure of Azz and every other poor bugger running the site. I often dream about giving the place a fresh start, but I don't know if it's something I can invest the time in it myself and honestly, this place, 100% Azz's baby. We're basically squatting at this point.

Crikey, effort appreciated I guess.

If anything, this topic has sent me on a trawl through the archives. Not easy considering a lot of the board functions are still a bit buggered up after the last move...

Re: G! Ghost town?

Thanks.

The only non functional function which I noticed is the View Members Post button. Everything else seems fine.

Its like a huge casino but no players. sad

Edit: http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=515835 got the member number count rolling.

Not so much that, I just don't know if I could keep up with it all.

We'd need the vanguard back, well Needles at the very least.

Re: G! Ghost town?

Woah people...

Yeah like Maindrian said really, these sites (being Gouranga! and GTAzz) were massively more popular before GTA3 came out. G! had some DMA (Rockstar as was) support in regards to the domain name, which they obviously kept after G! shut down. They're very kindly letting these forums squat on their official domain. I asked since we're mentioned in a few of the old manuals and it'd be a shame if you couldn't find any of the GTA history.

I keep thinking it'd be cool to give this place a push. To be honest I've somewhat abandoned the site and forums since I left uni, which was, erm, 11 years ago big_smile. I spent hundreds of hours running the site back then, daily updates and this place was constantly abuzz. Also used to make a load of cars for the 2d gta games, which I do kind of miss.

But now I spend my working days making websites and games, so it's a little hard to sum up the energy to do the same when I get home. If anyone wants to take the lead feel free. I think we could perhaps do with some new forum software installing. God bless Icey for his code, but it's so so dirty when you read it. I'd rip my developers a new one if they handed me code like that wink. Which is one of the reasons I can't bring myself to repair the bugs. I wouldn't be able to do it without rewriting huge portions. But then it's going on a decade old and frankly would that we all age as gracefully.

Trouble is, aside from a social hang out for a bunch of people who met years ago, not sure what we have to offer the web particularly. We don't create anything, none of us can be arsed finding and posting news, we're not a great deal of help when it comes to supporting the new games (though I'd argue still the place for the one guy a year who needs help developing for GTA2 smile ).

Domain name aside, I fund this place out of my own pocket purely to keep a little piece of history alive. My site got wiki-ied http://azz.gtazz.com for the same reason. It wasn't getting updated as a site but as a reference I thought it may come in useful. But the cars are hogging a huge amount of my expensive webspace, which is an annoyance. I need to check download stats and see if anyone still uses these things..

Hmm, 3million downloads since I redid the site in 2009. That's not bad, maybe it's worth keeping them then?

Anywho cheers for the interest, nice to see someone showing some enthusiasm around here for something other than insults wink

Re: G! Ghost town?

Thing is, we need people in more ways than one. When it comes down to it, we need people to run the site, do the updates, etc. If we can bat this back and forth and work something out, it'd be in everybody's best interests. As far as myself, I'm only really any good as a mod and site updates... Well, I'm bloody lazy, there's no getting around that. We'd need more moderators, more people to commit. I do have some ideas for who, of the few members left would be good for what, but they'd have to want to put some time into it and that's... Not likely. Who knows, I shouldn't speak for anybody.

The general tone of the place? If we have to move away from being a shrine to the old days, what's the direction? Just news? I wasn't aware modding was still a thing in GTA (I was pretty sure the whole Hot Coffee thing kicked sand our faces a bit there), and if it is, I'm sure there's better, more dedicated sites. As far as community goes, as long as I've been a mod, I've always operated under the assumption that we all know eachother well enough, we all know who would take offense to what, what buttons to push and so on, let a lot of things slide just for friendships sake. So we'd need a rethink there with new people. This needs careful consideration. So many factors need consideration.

I don't want to go into Cerbera crazy territory, but in this instance, his attention to detail would help. The guy had knowledge, not a doubt about it, but he had shit all for people skills as much as he liked to think he did.

As I said, it's Azz's baby, he's paying for it, he's kept this place running against all good sense. If he had sense, it'd be gone years ago and we'd be worse off for it, so we owe him that. I think we also owe him a bit more than just letting the place disappear under cobwebs.

Bollocks, I could just be talking a load of old toot. A man can dream.

Edit: Oh dear, I just followed Azz's link. The last of the 2D reviews are all mine. God, I wrote like a ghastly prick. How little has changed.

Re: G! Ghost town?

Okay, obnoxious image macros aside, why the fuck do you care?

If you want to come and chill, that's fine. But it's annoying that you just showed up out of nowhere and decided to make it your personal mission to rally the troops and return this website (of which you've never been a part of) to relive some fantastic vision of "the glory days" that you've concocted.

The site is what it is. At one point in time it united a planet full of GTA enthusiasts and, one by one, we've dwindled into what you see here. Any important IRL friendships this board has generated are maintained elsewhere and anything you see on here is, more than likely, some regurgitated IMs or something that a bunch of close friends feel the need to share. (This is, of course, ignoring the shit I usually post.)

Anyway, bro - glad you found the site and I'm glad you think it's neat, but there's no need to go emailing people like G!'s version of the Annoying Facebook Girl. Azz owns this site and you can see that he's already posted in this thread - why you felt compelled to email the webmaster is beyond me. Kudos for the response from Rockstar, though, I guess.

TL;DR - fuck off, open a tall one and have a sit on the Roof.

EDIT -

In case you're wondering, Azz is also a twat and he deleted my original account and won't un-delete it. I've been here a tiny bit longer than my current avatar leads on.

EDIT NUMBER TWO -

Both yours and the other new guys signatures are really annoying. Just FYI. If you want a good signature to model after, check out AJ's. Or Aimee's.

Re: G! Ghost town?

Few facts:
I emailed the site administrator before Azz replied which can be seen in the email.
I do not pursue / I am not likely to pursue such silly missions which you speak of.
I got an idea of it's glory days through a book I read which led me here. Source: My first post.
I like the orange theme of the forums and want others to taste it.

Thanks for your opinion.
