Jesus Christ, I don't think I've fallen in love with a cartoon quicker than I did with this. Alt-universe Doc and Marty rule.

Re: Rick and Morty

I can't wait for more episodes, the humor was spot on and just an all around well done show.

Re: Rick and Morty

Is it anything like Adventure Time? Would it fit in well in the Adult Swim lineup?

Re: Rick and Morty

If you've ever seen Mr. Sprinkles I'd say the humor (and it sounds like the voice actor) is much the same as that. Still good though, I'd absolutley love to see more.

Re: Rick and Morty

Is Mr. Sprinkles something that you can find on Adult Swim?

If it is (and this show is like that), then I don't think I'll give it a watch.

Re: Rick and Morty

This is Mr.Sprinkles. From what I gathered it was never on a network, it was a series of Flash animations for the web. And no, this isn't like Adventure Time. It's more adult than that and has much better writing.

Re: Rick and Morty

Just FYI, I asked very specifically if this was going to be some shit on Adult Swim. Your lack of any kind of affirmative response led me to believe that maybe it wasn't, or that it was web-based. I couldn't tell you how miffed I was that it was an Adult Swim cartoon, I fucking hate all of Adult Swim's in-house shows. This show was no exception.

First, I don't see how this is any more grown up than Adventure Time, which I also can't stand. It's stupid and childish, though I guess the jokes were more obviously adult-themed. But just because you make a joke about an 'adult' topic doesn't mean your show is mature.

But, seeing that Dan Harmon was involved in the show, I soldiered on in the hopes that I'd love this as much as I did the first two seasons of Community.

Second, I can't stand the protagonists's voices. The constant burping of the grandfather, his forced "inability" to pronounce words correctly and the obviously forced nasal-congestion voice that both of these assholes use. It makes the show completely fucking unwatchable.

Anyway, it's not that I hate cartoons. I really like a lot of them. Archer is great, Bob's Burgers is great, King of the Hill is the pinnacle of television perfection. But while all of these shows have a lot of stupid, immature toilet humor (or otherwise childish humor), they balance it out with a plot that's engaging, smart characters that show development or well-thought-out, real-world reflection and comment.

Fucking Rick and Morty have none of that. There is no 'writing'. It's just a lot of random non-sequiturs thrown together with odd pastels, annoying voices and toilet jokes. For the life of me I have never (and don't think I will ever) been able to understand why people like shit like this.

I will say, in all fairness, I was able to finish the episode, which I've never been able to do for shows like Tim and Eric or Squidbillies, so it's better than earlier in-house AS shows I've hated. And I will admit that, if the voice actors can just talk in normal fucking voices, I'd be inclined to watch it again. I find the idea of an interdimensional customs to be really interesting, for one thing. But I won't watch it if I have to listen to dribble and drool for thirty goddamned minutes.

I just can't believe Dan Harmon went from something so heartfelt, creative, well-produced and good to, well, this.

Re: Rick and Morty

Yeah, the first episode wasn't a lucky anomoly, the second is hilarious.

Also, Disco, you're a knob. It's not "random" at all, it's more that it charges at 1000 mph through loads of concepts and ideas and discards them just as quickly. My worry from the first episode and it still stands is that sooner or later, they're going to run out of ideas. I really can't see the flame sustaining, but while it burns brightly, I shall bask in its glow.

Re: Rick and Morty

If the second episode is also on YouTube, I'd be willing to give it another shot. If for no other reason than I can see it going some really interesting directions. But I really hope they stop forcing the annoying voices so much.

Honestly, if it weren't for that, I probably wouldn't have been so hypercritical. But thinking back on that episode, there are only two things I can remember - 1) inter-dimensional customs and 2) those fucking goddamned voices.

Oh yeah, and pastel colors.

Re: Rick and Morty

Yeah the second episode was enjoyable. They toned the scientist's voice down a lot and they story developed a lot more than it did in the first episode.

The third episode was okay, the voice was dialed back up and the story was a little cliché, but I lol'd pretty hard at the giant penis flying over the midwest. The Christmas storyline didn't do anything for me and the black guy plowing the mother was obvious from a mile away. Oh and the guts all over the US was pretty gross, almost too gross. But it was still a hell of a lot better than the first episode.

Anyway, I'm glad I kept watching. While I certainly don't love the show and I wouldn't be upset if I missed an episode or seven, it was definitely nice to watch while eating dinner yesterday. Here's to hoping it gets a little better, but I'm probably not being fair - I'm still judging it against Harmon's first two seasons of Community.

Re: Rick and Morty

Yeah, saw it the other day, was well fun. Also, played the game as well, after much pestering from Touge. Hilarious.

Closer to home, I can't wait for the next episode of this nonsense. Matt Berry is in FULL MATTY BERRY MODE.

Edit: Of course it was taken down.

I am a sucker for Vic and Bob. They are responsible for one of my favourite TV moments.

Re: Rick and Morty

I think Touge and I are in agreement that the show keeps getting better and better. I love that the humour in this one is pitch black too, to the point of making me uncomfortable at one point. Then moments later, they actually give Rick a moment of genuine empathy for Morty that's really quite sweet and feels earned.

I'm enjoying how R&M juggles its A and B storylines so far. It's hard to say which of the two threads is the main thrust of the story, they're both unrelated and only link up at the beginning and end but feel fully realised. The writing/editing is REALLY strong.

Re: Rick and Morty

I just watched it in a state of insomnia. Jesus Christ, that was a bleak one. I adored it, but holy hell, the ending is just upsetting. And the funniest thing is how casually Rick deals with it all, while Morty is in a state of solipsistic shock and horror.
